Reid, 2010 January 8, 1931 Page 1 Whelan-Bosworth The Miner is informed that an announcement of the marriage of Miss Charlotte Bosworth and Fenton Whelan, was made by the bride's mother, Mrs. Mary Bosworth at a party at her home on New Year's Eve. The marriage occurred several months ago. Both the contracting parties are well known and popular Smethport residents. The groom is employed by the Smethport Garage Company. They will make their home here, where a large circle of friends unite with the Miner in extending congratulations. Page 5 Laverick-Babarskey At the Methodist parsonage last Monday afternoon Rev. A.W. MacDonald united in marriage John W. Laverick and Miss Nellie Irene Babarskey both of Reynoldsville, Pa. They were accompanied by Mrs. Theresa Saxton of Reynoldsville. January 15, 1931 Page 1. Wright-Hammond Olean, Jan. 6 - Mrs. Raymond L. Parker entertained at two tables of Bridge Monday evening. Lunch was served at a late hour at which time announcement was made of the marriage of Miss Kathleen I. Hammond of this city to Charles K. Wright of Portville, which took place, Monday September 1, 1930 at Holland, N.Y. Favors were presented Miss Opal Thompson and Mrs. A.B. Orcutt. Mrs. Wright received a guest prize. The bride is a niece of the Misses Emma and Julia Tretton of East Main Street, and is well known here. The Miner and a large circle of friends extend congratulations Page 5. Bradford Couple Wed Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Margaret O. DeRosia of Foster Brook and Herman E. Burdick of Bradford. The ceremony took place Tuesday morning in Chicago, Ill., in the Methodist Temple. Rev. Emerson O. Bradshaw read the marriage service. Mrs. Burdick has been employed as accountant in the L.E. Mallory offices for a number of years. Mr. Burdick is engaged in the insurance business. After a brief wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Burdick will reside in Bradford. Mr. Burdick was a former Smethport resident. The Miner and a host of friends extend congratulation. January 22, 1931 Page 1. Oviatt-Cole The wedding of Miss Marie Crystal Cole, daughter of Mrs. Agnes Cole of Richburg, N.Y., and Clinton Lloyd Oviatt, was solemnized at the home of the bridegroom at East Smethport, January 15, 1931. The single ring service was effectively used by the officiating minister, Rev. J.E. Besant, pastor of the Smethport Baptist Church. The attendants were Miss Dorotha Cole and Ernest Cole, brother and sister of the bride. The bride was attractively gowned in blue silk crepe, while her sister wore a gown of white crepe. Just the immediate families witnessed the ceremony. A reception wedding dinner followed the ceremony and was capably served by Mrs. T.J. Bryan. Guests from out-of-town were: The bride's mother, Mrs. Agnes Cole; Miss Dorotha Cole, and Miss Gertrude Cole, sisters of the bride, and Ernest Cole, a brother, all of Richburg; Mr. and Mrs. Milo Cole of Millport, Pa., brother and sister-in-law of the bride. Mrs. Clinton Oviatt is a member of the First Baptist Church of Richburg, and is one of the town's fairest daughters, being extremely popular with the young people. She is a graduate of Richburg High School, and a member of the invincible and undefeated champion basketball team. The groom is a son of the late W.I. Oviatt. He was a partner with his father as general contractor and mover of buildings. Since his father's decease he has been employed with his brother in drilling operations. He was his father's constant companion a boy of the home and of splendid character. Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Oviatt will reside in their new home which is being erected for them by the well-know local building and contractor T.J. Byan. We wish these two young people much joy and happiness in the days ahead. Mrs. Oviatt will be heartily welcomed in our midst and we are sure she will soon find a place of service in the life of the local Baptist Church. Page 6. Bradford Girl Weds Bradford, Jan. 17. - The marriage of Miss Jean Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Allen, Chestnut Street, this city, to Cedric Hulmes son of Mr. and Mrs. Hulmes, took place in the Church of the Ascension here Friday morning. The Rev. Henry S. (unreadable) Jr. performed the ceremony. The bride was graduated from the Bradford Hospital Nurses' Training School and has been active in the medical profession for several years. Mr. Hulmes is control chemist at the Kendall Oil Company plant here. Page 6. Bradford Couple Observe Golden Anniversary Olean, Jan. 17. - Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bender, West State Street, observed their golden wedding anniversary Friday. Two sons and a daughter joined upon the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Bender, born in Germany, came here in 1899 and they purchased a house in West State Street in 1900, having lived there since then. Mr. Bender in the employe of the city several years, was retired on a pension one year ago. January 29, 1931 Page 1. Hailman-Ness The marriage of Miss Martha Ness of Lake Oregon, Oregon and Harry L. Hailman of Smethport, occurred December 30, 1930 in Lake Oregon. The bride is a popular school teacher in Lake Oregon. The groom who is the son of Mrs. Margaret Hailman of Water Street, is a retired Warrant Officer of the U.S. Navy in which he served for 25 years. The happy couple will reside in Lake Oregon. Wright-Penn The marriage of Miss Margaret Ann Penn, daughter of Mrs. Carrie Penn of Smethport and Howard Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wright also of Smethport took place Thursday afternoon, February 12th in the parsonage of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Olean, Rev. C.C. Shedd, pastor of that church officiating. Mrs. H.S. Hagg of Smethport was their attendant. The bride is a charming and popular Smethport girl and the groom is a fine industrious young man. He holds a position at the McKean County Creamery. They will make their home in Smethport. The Miner unites with a host of friends in extending congratulations. February 26, 1931 Page 1. Anderson-Lindholm Nuptials Solemnized The marriage of Miss Alva Lindholm daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Lindholm, West Main Street and Arnold Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Anderson of Farmers Valley, took place Wednesday noon, February 25, at an attractive wedding, held at the home of the parents of the bride to the presence of about forty-five friends and member of the family. Rev. G.T. Larson of Port Allegany officiated. The apartment was attractively decorated in pink roses and smilax and the ceremony was performed in front of a beautiful background of pink roses and ferns in the living room. Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. A.W. Peterson of Mt. Jewett, played Mendelssohn's wedding march and Miss Louise Van (unreadable) sang "I Promise You" and "An Sweet Mystery of Love" in a very artistic manner. Their attendants were Miss Jennie Ludquist of Buffalo and Arthur Anderson, Warren; brother of the groom. The bride made a lovely picture in white georgette with long floating veil and carried a bouquet of white roses and babies breath. The bridesmaid was also exquisitely attired in blue georgette and carried a bouquet of Ophelia roses. The bride is a charming and popular Smethport girl and a graduate of Westbrooks Academy. She has assisted her father in the Lindholme Grocery for several years and has made many friends. The groom is a fine industrious young man who holds a position in the McKean County Refinery. Following the ceremony the happy couple left on a southern motor trip of a week's duration. Upon their return they will live in their home on Water Street which is furnished ready for their occupancy. The Miner and a host of friends extend best wishes for a long and happy married life. Whalen-Bosworth The marriage of Miss Carlotte Mary Bosworth, daughter of Mrs. Mary Bosworth of West Main Street and Fenton Peter Whalen, occurred Friday afternoon, February 20th at the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Olean. The bride was attractively attired in a navy blue (unreadable) crepe ensemble and black straw hat and wore a shoulder spray of yellow roses and (unreadable). Following the ceremony the happy couple left for a short honeymoon after which they will make their home in Smethport. Miss Dorothy Harris, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Harris and Ray Cummings, son of Mrs. Frank Cummings of Eldred, were united in marriage, Saturday evening, February 14th at the Presbyterian parsonage, Allegany, Rev. Shriner officiating. The young couple are well known in this vicinity where they have many friends who extend hearty congratulations. March 5, 1931 Page 1. Rice-Rounsville At the Methodist parsonage last Saturday morning, Rev. A.W. MacDougald united in marriage Fred Rice of Smethport and Miss Bessie Virginia Rounsville of Port Allegany. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Rounsville of Clermont. The happy couple are to make their home in Clermont where Mr. Rice has a position with Clermont Clay Products Company. Miller-Field Mr. and Mrs. Henry Field of Fulton Street have announced the marriage of their daughter, Opal, to Wilbur G. Miller, son of Mrs. Clyde Yentzer of Nelson Street, which occurred Saturday evening, February 7th at the Baptist parsonage, Olean, N.Y., the Rev. A. Frank House, officiating. Miss Mildred Luke and Lawrence White of Olean were the attendants. The bride is a well-known young lady with a host of friends here who wish her much happiness. Local Couple Celebrate 56th Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. William Hafner of Willow Street, delightfully celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary Monday, March 23d at their home, where they received the felicitations of their many friends during the afternoon and evening. The children, Mrs. Delia Spanogle, Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Corwin, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hafner were present on this happy occasion and delicious light refreshments were served to the many who called to express their good wishes. The bride is a popular young lady of Indian Creek. The groom is the son of Rev. John Holmes of Coryville and is a fine young man. The young couple will reside in Coryville. The Miner and a large circle of friends extend congratulations. Page 3. Mrs. Glass and Dr. F.W. Paton of Bradford Wed Bradford, April 6. - Mrs. Grace Glass and Dr. F. Wade Paton, both of this city, were united in marriage this morning at the home of the former's sister, Mrs. Aden Crosby of Buffalo, N.Y., by Rev. Charles Smith, pastor of the Episcopal Church and a relative of the bride. Following an automobile trip the couple will return to Bradford and reside at No. 11 Potter Street. Both of the contracting parties have hosts of friends in Bradford, where they have lived most of their lives. The groom is one of the leading physicians of this city. April 16, 1931 Page 1. Rossi-Pettenatti The marriage of Miss Bernice Pettenatti, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pettenatti of Crosby and Peter Rossi, also of Crosby occurred Tuesday morning, April 14th at 9:00 o'clock with a nuptial mass at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, rev. Urban S. Barrett officiating. Their attendants were Miss Rena Pettenatti, sister of the bride and Alvin Feas. The contracting parties are both popular Crosby young people who have many friends in this section. They will make their home in Crosby where the groom is employed. McCoy of Smethport announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Catherine to Alexander McKay, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. McKay of Olean, N.Y. The marriage will take place in the early summer. Miss McCoy a former popular Smethport young lady, who is a graduate from Smethport High School and from the Mountainside Hospital at Montclair, New Jersey, is now employed in the Health Center in Newark, and resides in Montclair. Loehr pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiating. The bride is a popular and accomplished young woman, a graduate of Smethport High School and of Indiana (unreadable) School. She is a musician of considerable ability. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Johnson of Mt. Jewett and is a fine industrious young man who is engaged in the trucking business where they have many friends who unite with the Miner in extending congratulations. June 4, 1931 Page 1. Miss Lois Green Becomes Bride of George Hewitt. A very pretty wedding took place Wednesday evening, June 3rd at 8:00 o'clock at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in the presence of the immediate relatives and a large number of friends, when Miss Lois Green, daughter of MR. and Mrs. F.A. Green of King Street, became the bride of George Hewitt of Yeuang Yaung India. Rev. W.E. Van Dyke officiating. The altar was beautifully decorated for the occasion with gladioli and ferns. Their attendants were Mrs. Laura Van (unreadable) of the groom and Paul Green of Corning, brother of the bride. The bride was attractively attired in a midnight blue (unreadable) crepe gown with hat to match and carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds and lilies of the valley. The matron of honor wore a lovely gown of blue silk crepe with hat to match and carried a bouquet of pink sweet peas. The bridal party entered the church to the strains of Mendelssohn's wedding march played by Mrs. Van Dyke at the organ. Mrs. Van Dyke also played a fine program of organ music preceding the ceremony. The bride was given I marriage by her father, Mr. F.A. Green. The beautiful ring service of the Episcopal Church was used in the ceremony. Following the wedding, all present went to the Colonial Hotel, where the happy couple held a brief reception which was followed by a supper in the beautiful dining room of the hotel, which had been decorated for the occasion with blue iris and bridal wreath spirea from the flower garden of the bride's mother. Following the supper, Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt left for Port Allegany, where they took the train for Philadelphia. They will sail from New York on June 10th for Liverpool, will stay three days in England, then sail for Rangoon, from where they will go on to their new home in Yeuang Yaung, India, where Mr. Hewitt has held a fine position with the British Burmah Oil Company for a number of years. The bride one of Smethport's finest and most charming young women; she is a graduate of Smethport High School and has been associated with her father in business for some time. She has taken a prominent part in religious and social activities in Smethport and will greatly missed. The groom is a fine upright young man who has lived in India for a number of years, where he has been engaged in oil drilling. He arrived home in December for a visit, which culminated in a romance, and he is taking back home a bride. He is well known in this section and is deservedly popular. Celebrates Birthday and Wedding Anniversary The home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Marsh of Crosby was the scene of a happy gathering Sunday when friends and relatives met to help Mr. Marsh celebrate his 79th birthday anniversary which was Saturday, May 30th and the 53rd wedding anniversary of the couple. A delicious chicken dinner was served, covers being laid for 36. The table was decorated with spring flowers. Ice cream and cake was served during the afternoon. Mr. Marsh received a purse of money, also a lovely birthday cake, presented him by his nieces, Misses Bernice and Vixen Wilcox. The following guests were present: Mr. and Mrs. Matson Newman of Jamestown, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Marsh and family of Olean, N.Y.; Milford Marsh of Straight, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Mart Grinolds and family and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Grinolds and children of Friendship, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Merwin Grinolds of Bradford, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Simpier of Port Allegany, Pa.; and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Grinolds.
