Thomas, War Veteran, Dies in Hospital Clair M. Thomas, 66, a resident of Smethport RD 4, died in the Bradford Hospital at 7:20 p.m. Monday. He had been a patient in the hospital since Feb 18. He was born in Smethport on Nov. 4, 1896, son of the late Lewis R. and Minerva Ostrander Thomas. He attended the Smethport schools and resided in this area all his life and for the past seven years worked as a salesman for the Whiteman Home Products Co. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I aboard the U.S.S. VonSleuben. He was married to Lois Cole Schneller of Smethport in June, 1954 in Mt. Jewett. Mr. Thomas was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church here, the Smethport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Bucktail Post 138, American Legion, Smethport, and Keating Grange of East Smethport. The Thomas home on the Marvin Creek Highway, near the McKean County Home, was completely destroyed by fire of unknown origin shortly after Mr. Thomas was taken to the hospital. Surviving are his wife, one step-son, James Schneller, U.S. Navy, Norfolk, Va.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Wilford (Jacqueline) Cunningham, Smethport; four sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Myrtle) Hopper, Atascadero, Calif., Mrs. A. M. (Edna) Anderson, Jansen Beach, Fla., Mrs. Olive Schreiber, Smethport, and Mrs. Albert (Vera) Hauber, Fairview; several nieces and nephews. After a prayer service this morning at 10:30 in the Fry Funeral Home, the funeral service will be conducted at 11 in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. Arthur B. Cope, rector, will officiate.
