The Flames Threaten Destruction In the Vicinity of Bradford Bradford, Pa., May 6. - The most destructive forest fires known in this section for years have raged for the past week. A fire started between Glen Hazel and Ketners. Dolliver’s large sawmill, located between these points was soon destroyed, together with 10,000,000 feet of lumber, an enginehouse, railroad switches, 16 cars of lumber and coal, eight dwellings, an oil well and several thousand acres of timber land. The people of glen Hazel were powerless to cope with the rapidly spreading flames, and help was telegraphed for from this city. A special train consisting of a steamer and a large force of firemen with hose, was sent to the scene of the conflagration. When the firemen reached there they were unable to do anything to prevent the fire from approaching the town, and succeeded in diverting the course of the flames, with the aid of several streams of water and a bucket brigade. The woods along the Erie, between Ketner and Bradford, are on fire, and it is feared the loss to oil and lumber property will be great. Following are losses: Elias Deemer of Williamsport, 10,000,000 feet of hemlock lumber, valued at $85,000, partially insured; Dollivere’s sawmill, $20,000, no insurance; Ketner, St. Marys and Shalmut railroad, $20,000, insured. Fires are raging between Rixford and Farmers Valley on valuable timber lands, and large quantities have been destroyed. The Columbia Oil Company’s property is now threatened. Between Crawford Junction and Riterville a fierce fire is raging on both sides of the Erie railroad tracks. Considerable damage has been done between Gallagher and Hutchins. A fire has been in progress at Chipmunk since Thursday, and several oilwell rigs owned by Ranchet Bros. of Olean, N.Y. were destroyed. Between Smethport and Row city the woods are on fire in several places, but no damage has been reported. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
