He was 75. He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in New Castle to William O. and Lila Williams Shaw. Mr. Shaw served in the Navy during World War II. He was the owner of Valley Auto Spring Co., New Castle. Mr. Shaw was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Castle. He also belonged to Timber Greens Country Club; and the 32nd Degree Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 642, New Castle. He enjoyed golf and traveling. His wife, Jean Kelly Shaw, preceded him in death May 18, 1998. Herman Hugo HANSON Retired president of Gilbert's Insurance was WWII vet, civic leader Herman Hugo Hanson of St. Paul's Home, West Salem Township, formerly of Highland Road, Sharon, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Friday (1-4-02) in his residence in West Salem Township. He was 84. He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Boston to Herman and Lillian Burton Hanson. Mr. Hanson was a 1939 alumnus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., where he received his bachelor of science degree in engineering and business administration. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. In November 1944, he was stationed in Sharon at the former transformer division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he designed and built torpedoes. Testing of the torpedoes was conducted at the Pymatuning Reservoir, Crawford County. He also was stationed in Washington, D.C., for a period of time and was released from active duty in 1946. Mr. Hanson joined Gilbert's Insurance Agency, Sharon, in 1948 as vice president and general manager. He retired as president in December 1982 after 34 years of service. He received his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter certification in 1959 and was a member and president of the Mahoning-Shenango Valley Chapter CPCU Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. A former F.H. Buhl trustee, Mr. Hanson was appointed secretary-treasurer of the trustees in 1967, a position he held until October 1992. He was also a director and treasurer of the Buhl Club. A longtime director of the former McDowell National Bank, he was a member of the board of directors for the Shenango Valley Industrial Development Corp., the Shenango Inn, Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, Mercer County Crippled Children's Society, Mercer County Association for the Retarded, and the Merchants and Manufacturer's National Bank. He was chairman for the United Fund of the Shenango Valley and served on the Community Chest campaign. He was a member of the American Red Cross and the board of directors of what was Sharon General Hospital. He was also a member and past president of Sharon Country Club. Mr. Hanson was a member of Sharon Kiwanis Club; the Sharon Social Fishing Club at Lake Muskoka, Canada; the Century Club at Pymatuning Lake; and the Sharon University Club. A renowned sailor, he began sailing at 10 years of age on Nantucket Island, Mass., where he raced and taught sailing at Nantucket Yacht Club. He raced M.I.T. sailing dinghies during his collegiate years. Later, at the Pymatuning Yacht Club, he won six Thistle Class championships. He also participated in the Mackinac Races, the Bermuda Race in 1956, and Southern Circuit races including the Lipton Cup and Governor's Cup. He sailed in many races on the Great Lakes as first mate for Capt. S.K. Wellman, Cleveland, aboard the 40-foot yawl "Indigo." He won national championships in the Amphibian Class aboard his own boat, "Luffare," in 1959, 1960 and 1962. He received more than 300 trophies and was inducted into the Intercollegiate Sailing Hall of Fame, Annapolis, Md. In addition to competitive racing, he and his wife Mary and his children enjoyed cruising aboard "Luffare" for many years. In addition to sailing, Mr. Hanson enjoyed traveling and fishing off the Florida Keys at Islamorada, where he and his wife spent the winters for more than 20 years. Mr. Hanson met his wife, the former Mary Isabel Gilbert, when he was stationed in Sharon. They married Feb. 23, 1946 in First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Mrs. Hanson died March 2, 1999. Surviving are: two daughters, Dr. Holly H. Johnston, Eastham, Mass.; Mary "Mitzi" Kuster and her husband, Attorney Thomas W. Kuster, Hermitage; six grandchildren, Casey Pettitt Johnston, Gregory Warren Johnston, Jennifer Blythe Johnston, Brian Hugh Kuster, Andrew Thomas Kuster and Abbey Leigh Kuster; three great-granddaughters, Porter Elizabeth Kaboly, Sydney Pettitt Kaboly and Brittany Amber Johnston. Mrs. Rice was born July 29, 1902, in Steubenville, Ohio, a daughter of Joseph and Dora Stewart Lyle. She lived in the Youngstown area for 40 years before moving to West Middlesex in 1968. Gladys was a 1920 graduate of East Liverpool (Ohio) High School and attended Kent (Ohio) State University. She was a school teacher for four years in East Liverpool and later a social worker for Mahoning County Child Welfare for 10 years. Gladys was a member of New Bedford Presbyterian Church; and belonged to Order of the Eastern Star; and Daughters of the American Revolution, both New Castle. Her husband, George E. Rice, whom she married June 3, 1924, died in December 1967. She is survived by: a daughter, Marie Holtzman, West Middlesex; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A son, George J. Mr. Dewyer was born in Lincoln Place, Allegheny County, a son of the late Howard B. and Sadie Samantha Large Dewyer. Mr. Dewyer attended schools in McKeesport. He retired in 1988 as a lawn maintenance worker from Heritage Village in Southbury, Conn., after 15 years of service. Mr. Dewyer was previously employed for eight years as a meat cutter for First National Stores, Hartford, Conn.; and for seven years for Sikorsky Aircraft, a helicopter manufacturer, where he was a lead man. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Ansonia, Conn.; and Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 526 in Elizabeth, Pa. Mr. Dewyer moved to the Shenango Valley in 1998. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II from Aug. 1, 1944, until his discharge on June 25, 1946. His wife, Janice I. Dewyer, whom he married April 23, 1947, preceded him in death in October 2000. Survivors include: one daughter, Dorothy M. Dewyer, Canonsburg, Pa., formerly of Greenville; and one brother, James M. Mr. Williams was born Dec. 8, 1942, in Sharon, a son of Robert M. and Helen J. Adams Williams. He graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1960. He later earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Gannon University in Erie and a master's degree from Slippery Rock University. He had also attended Pennsylvania State University, St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and Bowling Green University in Toledo, Ohio. Mr. Williams worked for the past 30 years at Polk Center, where he was a unit manager at Terrance. He had also been a unit manager at North Side. Earlier in his employment at Polk, he served as director of the recreational department, having started the Picture Bingo Program, which remains in use today. He also coordinated the circus at the center. He was a member of St. Stephen's Church in Oil City. Mr. Williams coached the Franklin High School girls track team during the 1990s and had also coached elementary basketball at St. Patrick's School. He was very involved as his children were growing up in Little League baseball, starting in MinorDivision. He was a "Friday golfer," enjoyed reading, and was an avid runner, participating in many races. One race that he coordinated was the Williams Clutch in the Gobble Wobble Thanksgiving Day Run in Buhl Farm park, Sharon. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ann Lucas, whom he married on July 11, 1970. She and her late husband, Leroy Campbell, whom she married June 28, 1932, operated a Guernsey dairy farm in Centertown for 40 years. She then lived in Grove City for 10 years prior to moving seven years ago to United Church Manor, a senior housing facility in West Seneca, to be near her daughter and family. Mrs. Campbell worked as a tax collector for Wolf Creek Township and as a tipstaff at Mercer County Courthouse. Throughout her lifetime, she was active in many church activities as a former member of East Main Presbyterian Church in Grove City and, in recent years, First Presbyterian Church of West Seneca. Mrs. Campbell was an avid gardener and enjoyed playing 500 cards. She loved spending time with her family. She was a 50-year member of Millbrook Grange. Jane Lyman VOYTEN of 7642 Haverhill Lane, Canton, Mich., formerly of Sharon, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Saturday (1-12-02) in her home following an extended illness. She was 72. Mrs. Voyten was born July 29, 1929, in Sharon, a daughter of Raymond "Si" and Florence Gibbons Lyman. She was an alumna of Sharon High School Class of 1947 and graduated from what is now Slippery Rock University, where she earned a bachelor's degree and her teaching certificate. Mrs. Voyten was employed as an elementary school teacher for Sharon Area School District in its Wengler Avenue School. She enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, bridge and, most recently, the computer. She enjoyed designing her own greeting cards with her personal computer, as well as corresponding through e-mail with many friends. Mrs. Voyten was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth Mich., and was a former member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon. Her husband, William L. Voyten, whom she married Nov. 27, 1954, survives at home. She also leaves: three daughters, Barbara Ziberna and her husband Keith, Raleigh, N.C.; Carol Pisarski and her husband Jan, Canton, Mich.; and Peggy Shanabarger and her husband John, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and one sister, Marion Nemetz, Hermitage. She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, Brian and Matt Ziberna; LeeAnn and Katie Pisarski; and Rachel, Mary and Ann Shanabarger. Mrs. Voyten was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Florence Ann Scragg. Mr. Dawson was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Farrell, a son of the late James Harvey and Celina Yvonne DeBrakeleer Dawson. Mr. Dawson was a 1948 alumnus of Farrell High School, where he was a member of the marching band. A 1953 graduate of Grove City College, he received a bachelor of arts degree in education and retired in the 1980s from Sharon School District where he was a special education teacher for more than 27 years. An avid sports fan, he was the voice of the Sharon High School Tigers, announcing home games for many years. He also was a member of the lines crew at the games. He was a basketball season ticket holder at Sharon High School and Farrell High School and was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates fan. Mr. Dawson was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Sharon Lodge 103, where he was the exulted ruler in 1974. He served as secretary for many years and was on a number of committees. He was also a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Sharon Lodge 347. He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Hermitage; and Sharpsville Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling, particularly to California, Nevada and other western states. He had a lifelong love of science fiction and was a movie buff. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Nancy Ann) Brown, Pittsburgh; two sons, Lee Daniel Dawson and his wife Stephanie, Windsor, Ontario, Canada; and Pete Michael Dawson and his wife Jamie, Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, Amanda, Melissa, Janine, Matthew, Joshua and Savannah; and three nieces, Debra Bobish, Wendy Chapin and Kelly Guido. Mrs. Swartz was a former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage, and still belonged to their friendship circle and Pollyanna Guild. She also was a member of the South Pymatuning Ladies Club and the South Pymatuning Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary. Some of her hobbies included reading, sewing and crocheting. Her husband of 72 years, Mr. Earl Lee Swartz, whom she married June 18, 1929, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Mr. Joseph (Martha L.) Simons, South Pymatuning Township; one son, Timothy Earl Swartz of Shiloh, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. J.
