Chambersburg, Pa.: J. M. Runk & Co., 1897, Vol. I, page 548. JOSEPH E. POSTLETHWAITE, Atkinsons Mills, Mifflin county, Pa., was born in Newton Hamilton, August 9, 1861, and is a son of Thomas and Nancy (Stevens) Postlethwaite. Thomas Postlethwaite was a native of Newton Hamilton. He served in the late war and was killed in the battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. Joseph E. Postlethwaite, after the death of his father, became a member of the family of his uncle, Daniel Stevens. He attended the public schools of Patterson, Juniata county. Ill health prevented him from finishing his course at the high school. At the age of fourteen he entered his uncle's store as a clerk, and served for seven years without wages. At the end of this time his uncle received him as a partner. They then sold out in Patterson and removed to McVeytown, where they opened the first hardware store in that town, in 1881. After seven years, Mr. Postlethwaite bought out his uncle's interest, and conducted the business alone for two years. He then sold out and did general work for one year, after which he removed to his present place of 197 acres, and cultivated it for three years. On account of ill health, he relinquished farming for a while, but resumed it again, with stock raising. Mr. Postlethwaite is a Republican. He belongs to the I. O. O. F. and K. of P. Joseph E. Postlethwaite was married at McVeytown in the spring of 1885, to Jennie, daughter of Elisha Bratton, a farmer of Oliver township. Their children are: Mary; Elisha; Lee; and Arthur. Mr. And Mrs. Postlethwaite are members of the Presbyterian church.
