Deed Book C, p. 310-311, 15 Aug. 1796 This Indenture made this fifteenth day of August, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety six, Between James Samuels of Nelson County, State of Kentucky, Gentleman, of the one part, and William Wakefield and Jonathan Masden, both of Wayne Township, Mifflin County, and State of Pennsylvania, Farmers, of the other part. Witnesseth, That for and in consideration of the full sum of one hundred and eighty pounds, good and lawful money of the State of Pennsylvania, to the said James Samuels in hand, well and truly paid, by the afforesaid William Wakefield and Jonathan Masden the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, and himself therewith fully satisfyed. He the afsd. James Samuels Hath granted, bargained, sold, alleined[?], enfeofed, and confirmed, and And by these Presents Doth grant, bargain, sells, allein, enfeoff and confirm unto the affsd. William Wakefield and Jonathan Masden their heirs and assigns, all that messuage, tenement and tract of land situated on the South side of the Bald Eagle Creek, Upper Bald Eagle Township, Mifflin County and State of Pennsylvania, containing three hundred and four acres, as held by location and improvement by the afforesaid James Samuels, bounded by land of John and Jacob* Masden on the East, by a Mountain on the South, by the Bald Eagle Creek on the North and by narrows on the west; together with all the improvements now thereon and also all woods, underwoods, trees, fields, pastures, ways, waters and water courses, rights, heridetments and advantages thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining: To have and to hold the afforesaid tract of land and appurtenances, with all and singular the improvements afforesaid, to the said William Wakefield and Jonathan Masden, to the only proper use and behoof of them the afsd. William Wakdefield and Jonathan Masden their heirs, executors, administrators or assigns for ever. And the said James Samuels doth for himself and his heirs, against himself and his heirs, the afforesaid tract of land, with the improvements and all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging shall and will warrant and for ever defend by these presents. I have no evidence that brother Jacob ever owned land here with John. Yost is from the Dutch Joost, and the deed recorder may have tried to anglicize it, although the usual equivalent is Joseph.
