Ernest, who lives on the Harvey farm just east of Ryde station, was struck by Limited express, No. 25, on this (Wednesday) afternoon at Ryde and instantly killed. We have no further particulars at this time. Mr. Ernest as a man we presume about 58 years of age and universally respected. The writer has known him intimately for years and records his death with profound sorrow. RICHARD. Democrat and Sentinel, Lewistown, Thursday, January 21, 1897, page 8 RYDE AND VICINITY. On Wednesday afternoon, January 20, our community was severely shocked to hear of the sad death of Geo. W. Ernest, who lived on the Harvey farm, about 1/2 of a mile west of Ryde along the railroad. He had been to Ryde station and had started for home, walking on No. 3 passenger track, when Mail train No. 25 came suddenly around the sharp curve immediately above the station and struck Mr. Ernest, hurling him a great distance and killing him instantly. There were freight trains moving away from the plug on both outside tracks; and the unfortunate man being between them was thus hindered from learning of the approach of the train either by hearing or by sight. Neither could the engineer of the train see in time to give warning. The skull of the deceased was badly crushed, the back and the left leg broken, but the surface of the body was scarcely scarred, with the exception of the face which was cut in several places. The funeral took place on Saturday, leaving the home at 10.50 a.m., proceeding to Vineyard on Way Passenger, and from thence to the Wayne U. B. church by sled, where a very impressive service was conducted by Rev. Hough, pastor of the 2nd U. B. church of Altoona, and Rev. Mattern pastor of the M. E. church of Newton Hamilton. Rev. Hough preached from Rev. 14:13. The body was interred in Wayne cemetery where rest the mortal remains of his first wife and his son Francis. George Ernest was born near Waterford, Perry county, July 8, 1827, and was 69 years, 6 months and 12 days old when he met his untimely death. Almost the whole of his life was spent in Mifflin county in Wayne and Oliver townships. He was a farmer by occupation, having spent his whole life in incessant toil. He also found time to read, and had his mind stored with useful information relating to both the present and the past. His favorite branch of study was history, which had a greater charm for him than any other class of literature. His favorite book was the Bible which was used twice a day in family worship, as well as in private study. He was a consistent Christian, having been converted 46 years ago, and during that time was a member of the U. B. church of Wayne. He was highly respected by all with whom he came in contact. Mr. Ernest was twice married, the first time to Rosannah Irwin who died in 1878, and the last time to Mrs. Catharine Cornelius who survives him. By his first wife he had eleven children, by his last wife two. Ten children survive him whose names are as follows: Mrs. Laura Ehrenfeld, John Ernest and Mrs. Bessie Armour of Kansas; William A. and George E. Ernest, and Mrs. Ross McCormick of Altoona; James F. and Herbert, Miss Grace and Mrs. Viola E. Moist of Ryde. He is also survived by two brothers, John of Snyder county and William of New Castle, Pa.; and by five sisters, Mrs. Phebe Leonard of Youngstown, Ohio, Mrs. Mary Coulter of Atkinson's Mills, this county, Mrs. Lizzie Rudy, of Mill Brook, N.C., Mrs. Nancy Knepp and Mrs. Emma Hess, of Carlisle, Pa. Mr. Ernest was a kind husband and father, and although hurled from earth to eternity without a moment's warning, his family find much consolation in the thought that he was prepared for the summons whether sudden or long anticipated. The family extend their heartfelt thanks to the friends and neighbors for the kindness shown them in their hour of affliction. Democrat and Sentinel, Lewistown, Thursday, January 28, 1897 DIED.
