Fisher The Sentinel March 12, 1940 FARMER DEAD IN 77TH YEAR Former Railroader, He Retired From Agricultural Life 14 Years Ago Jacob A. Fisher died at his home in Granville Tuesday evening at 7:10 o'clock. Death was caused by angina pectoris, chronic myocarditis, and complications. Mr. Fisher had been in ill health for a number of years but bedfast for only five weeks. He is survived by his wife, the former Emma Thomas, and eight children: Homer, whereabouts unknown; Harry A. , 4881/2 W. Fourth Street, Lewistown; Edgar, Granville; Elder, Akron, Ohio; Mrs. George (Elsie) Bramm, Barree; Mrs. Samuel (Mary) Van Scyoc, Granville; Mrs. Walter (Edna) Stelzer, Floral Park, Long Island; Mrs. Gody (Stella) Egli, Flushing, Long Island; 20 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; four brothers, Samuel, Granville; Andrew and Edward, Lewistown; John, Maitland; three sisters Mrs. Susan Young, St. Louis, Missouri; Mrs. Ella Sternheim, Pittsburgh, and Mrs. Prudence Rager, Akron, Ohio. Mr. Fisher was aged 77 years, 3 months, 20 days. Funeral services in charge of Rev. Allen G. Brubaker, assisted by Rev. Norman J. Simmons, will be held Saturday afternoon at the late home at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Maitland Brethren Cemetery where his parents are buried. He was the son of John and Susan Hoffman Fisher being born at Maitland and spent his entire life in Mifflin County. In his earlier life he was employed as an engine wiper at the round house of Pennsylvania Railroad Company. He started farming in the Spring of '95 and owned various farms about the county. Fourteen years ago he retired from active work to his home in Granville. He and Mrs. Fisher celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on February 13. His father, John, was a Civil War veteran and an uncle was a captain in the same war. As long as he was able, he attended services at Fairview Brethren-in-Christ Church. _____ John FISHER Lewistown Sentinel, Mifflin County - August 2, 1881 Maitland Accident and Death The community about Maitland was thrown into a state of excitement on Friday by the announcement that John Fisher had suddenly met a violent death. Mr. F. was engaged felling a tree which leaned over the creek not far from his home, and it is supposed that as the tree fell he slipped and fell down the bank, a distance of about five feet, to the edge of the water, and before he could recover himself it landed across his head, causing instant death. His age was about 40 years, and he leaves a wife and 13 children. _____ John M. FISHER Lewistown Sentinel, January 7, 1946 STROKE WHILE ON MOUNTAIN IS FATAL TO JOHN M. FISHER John M. Fisher, aged 70 years 8 months 9 days died in Lewistown Hospital Wednesday afternoon, 1:40 o'clock, of the effects of a cerebral hemorrhage which he suffered on Tuesday while he was on Jacks Mountain, near his home one-half mile west of Maitland. He was with a friend inspecting timber when he was stricken. A hand sled was used to convey him to his home. Admitted to the hospital Tuesday he did not regain consciousness. Born within a half mile from where he suffered the attack in Derry Township, April 23, 1875, he was a son of the late John and Susan Hoffman Fisher. Surviving are his wife, the former Lorena Knepp, and two sons and two daughters; Jay E. Fisher, Middleburg; John Sylvester Fisher, 7 Shaw Avenue; Mrs. Stanley (Martha) Shellenberger, Shiremanstown, Cumberland County, Miss Kathryn Fisher, at home, and four grandchildren. Other survivors are two brothers and two sisters; Samuel Fisher, Granville; Edward Fisher, near Maitland; Mrs. Frank C. (Prudence) Rager, 506 W. Fifth Street; Mrs. Ella Stierheim, Pittsburgh. Mr. Fisher was a life-long resident of Mifflin County. In his earlier life he was a carpenter and then a farmer in Dry Valley on the former Andrew Spanogle Farm, now owned by S. H. Harshbarger. During the last three years he was employed in the boring mill of the Standard Steel Works Division, Burnham. He was a member of a family of seven brothers and seven sisters. His father was fatally injured by a falling tree within one-half mile from where the son became ill with a cerebral stroke. Friends may call at Fretz Funeral Home after Friday noon until services there Saturday afternoon, 2 o'clock. Rev. Harold Snider and Rev. Alvin C. Cox, pastors of the Shaw Avenue and Maitland Churches of the Brethren, will officiate. Burial will be made in the William Lind Memorial Cemetery. _____ Mahala Emmaline Fisher The Sentinel December 14, 1950 Mrs. Jacob Fisher Mrs. Mahala Emeline Fisher, widow of Jacob Fisher, died at 1:05 A.M. today at her home in Granville, aged 83 years. Death was due to complications incident to her age. Her husband died 10 years ago. She was born near Troxelville, daughter of Thomas and Lavina (Clinger) Thomas, and she was a member of Samuel's Church. Surviving are the following seven children: Harry A. Fisher, of 139 1/2 West Market Street, Lewistown; Edgar Fisher of Granville; Elder Fisher of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Elsie Bramm of Reading, Mrs. Samuel (Mary) Van Scoyoc of Granville; Mrs. Walter (Edna) Steltzer of Floral Park, Long Island, N. Y., and Mrs. Gody (Stella) Egli of Oakland, Calif. There are 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Booth's Funeral Home, McVeytown, in charge of the Rev. Frank S. Crawford, followed by interment in the Maitland Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday until the time of services. _____ Susan A. FISHER Lewistown Sentinel ~ January 26, 1914 Lewistown, Mifflin County, PA Heart disease and infirmaties of old age were the cause of the death of Mrs. Susan A. Fisher, a few instances after midnight Saturday at the residence of her son, Jacob A. Fisher of Anderson. Mrs. Fisher was the widow of John M. Fisher who was killed 33 years ago by a tree falling upon him. Her age was 74 years and 3 months and she is survived by the following sons and daughters: William R. Fisher, of Longfellow; Jacob A. Fisher, of Anderson; James T. Fisher, of near Lewistown; Mrs. Katie Stull and Mrs. Prudence Rager, of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Ella Stull, of Pittsburg; Mrs. Susie H. Sloat, of St. Louis, Mo.; Samuel M.; John M.; Andrew S.; and Edward H. Fisher, all of Lewistown; and Mrs. Retta Kuhns, of Akron, Ohio. There were fourteen children in the family, two of them being dead. A brother, John Hoffman, of Jersey Shore, Pa; and a sister, Mrs. Hannah Soles, of Duncannon, are living. Mrs. Fisher was a member of the Brethren church for 42 years. Her funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Brethren church at Maitland. Revs. S. J. Swigart and F. M. Howe officiating. Interment in the Brethren cemetery at Maitland.
