Kauffman, of Ryde, an old railroad watchman, fell dead on the Manayunk railroad bridge on Monday night from a paralytic stroke. He was seen light his lantern at the east end of the bridge by a Mr. Flasher, who was waiting for him at the west end. When he got about two-thirds of the way over, Mr. Flasher saw the light go out. He waited about fifteen minutes and then started over to see what was the matter and found Mr. Kauffman lying on his back on the foot board that runs across the bridge. He spoke to him but received no answer. He then felt his pulse and found that he was dead. Mr. Flasher then got some assistance and he was taken to his home at Ryde. When found, he had his dinner bucket and lantern clutched tightly in his hands. Huntingdon Globe, Huntingdon, Pa., September 8, 1887
