H. Long's Funeral Funeral services for Albert Hayes Long were conducted at Fretz Funeral Home, Monday afternoon, 1:30. His late home was at 13 North Main Street, Yeagertown. His pastor, Rev. L. Earl Shaffner, Yeagertown Methodist Church, read "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and" Nearer My God To Thee," and based his gospel message on Psalm 91:2 "I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; my God; in Him will I trust." Burial was made in Yeagertown Lutheran Church Cemetery. Casket carriers were Frank Woomer, Frank Pecht, Percy Hannon, Marvin Krick, Charles Price and Joseph Hollis. A group of members of Yeagertown Methodist Women's Society was at the funeral in a body. Out of county relatives and friends in attendance were: Mrs. Robert Wadsworth, Harrisburg; Mr. & Mrs. M. W. Long. ~ Wife and daughter Sentinel Saturday, 25 Jan 1941 page 3 Albert Hayes Long Resident of Yeagertown 40 years, Albert Hayes Long, aged 69 years 3 months 20 days died at his home 13 North Main Street, Friday afternoon, 12:10. He was stricken by a cerebral stroke Thursday afternoon, 4:45 o'clock, while in his home. Born in Thompsontown, he was a son of the late Robert and Maria (Baker) Long. Surviving are his wife, the former Ida Smith of Thompsontown and a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Mildred) Lukenbaugh, at home, and one granddaughter. A brother and two sisters are living: Merton W. Long, Port Royal; Mrs. Amos (Nellie) Stover, Lewistown; Mrs. Robert (Lulu) Wadsworth Harrisburg. Until four years ago, he was an employe of Standard Steel Works Company, Burnham, working as a saw setter. In his earlier life he worked at the Hames H. Mann axe factory, Yeagertown until the plant was abandoned. He was a member of Yeagertown Methodist Church and of the Men's' Bible Class, Harold L. Lantz, teacher, and of Yeagertown Fire Company. Mr. Long was quiet and unassuming. In his home he was deeply devoted to his wife and children. In the community he enjoyed the esteem of a wide circle of friends. He was an honest and upright citizen. Friends may call at Freitz Funeral Home after Sunday afternoon, 1:00 until time for services there Monday afternoon, 1:30. His pastor Rev I. Earl Shaffner will officiate. Burial will be in Yeagertown Lutheran Cemetery. _____ LONG, Charles Former Resident of County Dies in Huntingdon Charles Long of Altoona, a former resident of this county, died in Huntingdon Saturday, January 11, 1936 of acute indigestion, aged 67 years. He was born and reared in McAlisterville, a son of the late Frank and Josephine (Dunn) Long, When a young man he removed to Altoona and entered in the employment of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters J. M. Long, son of James Long and Mrs. Edgar Jamison of McAlisterville; Mrs. Katherine Zeigler of Huntingdon; Mrs. Martha Dunn of Annville; Mrs. Lou Kunkle, Mrs. Margaret Shellenberger, Mrs. William Cox and Frank Long of Altoona and Mrs. Clara Eichman of Northumberland. Funeral Services were held in Lutheran Church. Belleville, last Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by Rev. Mr. Middlesworth. Burial was made in adjoining cemetery. _____ LONG, Charles Charles M. Long, formerly from Juniata County and who lived at VanDyke for a number of years, dropped dead in Lewistown on Monday last. He was employed by Standard Steel Works. Deceased is survived by his wife and four sisters, Mrs. J.A. Barklow, VanDyke; Mrs. Alton Fike, Mifflin; Mrs. William Collins, Mifflin and Mrs. Hulda Hopple, Rouzerville, Pa. The funeral was held from his late home, 115 E. Water Street, Lewistown, this (Thursday) morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.L. Miller and interment in Presbyterian cemetery, Mifflintown. He died on 2 Jul 1925. (son of Daniel Long and Margaret J.) _____ LONG, Darwin B. Darwin B. Long 46, of Mifflin HCR 67 died of natural causes at 11:00 a.m. Thursday October 19, at Lewistown Hospital. Born September 7, 1943 in Milford Twp, Juniata County, he was son of Maude Robinson Long, Mifflin HCR 67 and the late Darwin T. Long. His wife Betsy I. (Barton ) Long whom he married July 26, 1968 survives. Also surviving are sons, Stephen D. Long and Anthony J. Long both at home; brothers and sisters, D. Laverne Long, Pataskala Ohio, William T. Long Jefferson City, Tenn. Mary Maude Groninger, Mifflintown. He was self employed as a farmer. He was member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown, and the Pennsylvania Farmers Association. Services were held at 2:pm Sunday at the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas H. Kelly officiating. Interment was in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port royal RD2. _____ LONG, Darwin T. Darwin T. Long, 84 of Box 32, Mifflin Star Route, died Friday, August 22 of a heart attack in the Lewistown Narrows in 1986. Born 14 Jul 1902 in Turbett Twp., Juniata County, he was a son of the late Harry A. and Mary C. Patton Long. His wife, Maude Robinson Long survives. Also surviving are three sons: LaVerne Long of Ohio, Darwin B. Long of Mifflin Star Route, William T. Long of Jefferson City, Tennessee; one step-daughter, Mary Maude Groninger of Mifflintown; three sisters: Zella Beaver of Selinsgrove, Reba Girton of Selinsgrove, Lenore Speer of Blairs Mills; two brothers: Harry A. Long Jr. of Reedsville and David L. Long of Lancaster; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. The deceased was a retired realtor, insurance agent and farmer. He was a member of the Port Royal United Methodist Church, director and vice president of the Juniata Valley Bank, member of Union Lodge No. 324 F & AM of Mifflintown, Juniata Forest No. 88, Mifflintown Rotary Club, Mifflintown Hose Company No. 1 and the National Rifle Association. Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Home, Mifflintown with Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Interment was in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. _____ LONG, Dorothy Dorothy Long, 78 of Lancaster, and formerly of Mifflintown and McAlisterville, died Tuesday morning June 25, 1996 at Community Hospital of Lancaster. born in Smithville, she is survived by her husband John Long. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: four sons, Theodore Wiker, Milheim, Donald Wiker, Lancaster, Douglas Wiker, Lancaster and Paul Wiker, Bradenton, FL; two daughters, Barbara Hale, Lewistown, six stepsons, John H. Long, Suffolk, Va., Gene Goodhart, Reading, Raymond Long, Maytown, Charles Long, Lancaster, Richard Long, Lancaster, Jerome Long, Lancaster, Two stepdaughters, Alice Kearns, and Mary Blazak, Lancaster, 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Long Dies; Ex-Bulletin Newsman, Franck C. Long, retired Philadelphia newspaperman and former football coach, died Sunday in St. Joseph's Hospital, Tucson, Arizona. He was 72. Mr. Long suffered a stroke Saturday evening at his Tucson home where he had lived for 7.5 years. Mr. Long was an assistant city editor of the Bulletin when he retired in April 1964. Before that he had been a police reporter, beginning on the Inquirer and with an interlude on the now defunct Record. He was known for his many friendly relationships with police officials and men in the ranks. Assistant City Editor - As an assistant City editor, he directed the Bulletin's police reporters. Mr. Long was a native of Lewistown, Pa. He graduated from Central High School here and from Swarthmore college, where he was a member of the football team. Subsequently, he was an assistant coach under Harvy Harman at the University of Pa and later at Rutgers University. In Retirement he tended his citrus trees. During World War I he served with the Mariners. He was a Mason. Mr. Long is survived by his wife, the former Glo Johnson, Services will be held tomorrow in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Elmer F. Brown, Yeagertown. He read the hymn, "O Word of Word, Incarnate" and based his gospel message on 1John 1:9. "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ, his son, cleanseth from all sin" Burial was made in St. Mark's Cemetery, Casket carriers were James H. Strunk, J. Clayton Jacobs, Harvey E. wilt, Porter Kline, Stewart M. Peters, and Mearl V. Smith. Mr. Long, a resident of Ridley Park, Philadelphia during recent years died Thursday afternoon, 2:45 at Taylor Memorial Hospital, Ridley Park, where he was a patient 10 days. Heart disease caused his death.Surviving him are his wife, Bessie Louise Peters Long, and a son Frank C. Long, at home night editor, Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, and two brothers and two sisters: A Hayes Long, Yeagertown; Merton Long, Port Royal; Mrs. Robert (Lulu) Wadsworth, Harrisburg; Mrs. Amos (Nellie) Stauffer, Lewistown. Mr. Long was an employe of Baldwin, Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, until last summer. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and of Washington Camp 262, P.O. S. of A. Lewistown. He attended services in Norwood, Philadelphia. Among many relatives and friends at the funeral were Franck C. Long and Mrs. Homer Clark Long, Ridley Park; Mrs. Dora Webb and Miss Jeannette Peters, Philadelphia; Mrs. Margaret S. Long, Brooklyn New York; Charles Warner and family and Mrs. Norman Long, Altoona; Mr. & Mrs. Robert Wadsworth, Harrisburg; Harvey Harman, New Brunswick, N.J. head coach of Rutgers Univ. football team. _____ LONG, Joseph H. Prominent Man Dead: Joseph H. Long , a veteran of the Civil War and one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Renovo, died last Sunday Nov. 4, 1907, at his residence on Thirteenth Street after an illness of only a few days at the advanced age of 78 years, 4 months, 3 weeks and 4 days. The deceased was born in Perry County, June 9, 1829. In early manhood he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and worked at his trade, that of a blacksmith, continuously in its service for a period of 50 years. He was retired about eight years ago., having reached the company's age limit. In July 1865, he enlisted under Capt. Levi Musser in the one hundred First regiment, Company A, Pennsylvania Infantry in Juniata County and served until the close of the war. Although his career as a soldier was brief, it was a brave and honorable one. He was one of the oldest Odd Fellows in the State, having become a member of the order 54 years ago, at Mifflintown. He never asked for a transfer of membership, and was at the time of his demise still a member of the Mifflintown lodge. He was also an honorary member of Washington camp No. 88 P.O. S. of A of Renovo. In 1856 Mr. Long was married at Mifflintown to Miss Susanna Keysberry, Perry County, who with three children survive Him. Mr. Long brought his family to Renovo in 1878, and for 29 years he held a high place in the esteem of his neighbors and the town people in general. In religious faith Mr. Long was a Dunkard, and he possessed all the depth of kindness, for which that sect is noted. His family life was a happy one. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, services being conducted by Rev. J.D. Cook, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery. Long, 94 of Port Royal RD1 died at 2:30 a.m. January 31, 1990, at his residence. Born Feb. 23, 1895 in Beale Twp, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Lewis and Matilda (Steinberger) Long. His wife, Blanche M. (Bailor) Long, died in 1983. Surviving are: three sons, Raymond T. Long Sr., Albert "Jack" Long both of Port Royal, RD1, Larry L. Long, Port Royal RD2; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was a retired farmer, carpenter and auctioneer. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Port Royal RD, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove with the Rev. David B. Biser officiating. Interment was in the Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. _____ LONG, Martin Luther Sentinel, Lewistown Friday August 4, 1936 Martin Luther Long, age 31 years, former resident of Lewistown, died Thursday at the home of his parents in Ridley Park after a long illness. He was son of Mr. & Mrs. H. Clark Long who formerly resided on Valley Street and he was born July 28, 1905. He attended Lewistown public schools, and Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania, graduated in 1926. He studied law at Temple Univ. and University of North Carolina, successfully passing the bar examinations of both states. He was a member of the bar in both Philadelphia and Berks County, practicing in Reading since 1931. He was appointed assistant Deputy Attorney General in April 1935, and was granted an extended leave of absence in December due to illness. He married Margaret Mary Shlapping in May 1935, and is survived by his wife, his parents and one brother Frank C. Long. Funeral Services - Funeral services for Martin Luther Long, whose late residence was with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. H. Clark Long, Ridley Park near Philadelphia will be conducted at the funeral home of J. H. Fretz, Monday afternoon 2:30. Burial will be in Lewistown on Monday noon train. _____ LONG, Mary (WETZLER) Mrs. William H. Long Died 11 Aug 1927. Interred 19 Aug 1927 Following about a week's illness, Mrs. Mary (Wetzler) Long, wife of Wm. H. Long, died at her home in Thompsontown, early last Thursday morning, aged nearly 61 years. The deceased is survived by her husband, two brothers and four sisters. The funeral was held at Thompsontown in the Lutheran church, Sunday afternoon, Rev. Ward of Millerstown, officiating. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. LONG, Samuel Newton Samuel Newton Long, a well known Barber dies 1936 Samuel Newton Long , proprietor of one of Mifflin's barber shops, died in the Lewistown Hospital at 7 o'clock on Sunday morning of pneumonia. He was aged 54 years, 1 month and 2days the date of his birth, February 13, 1882., He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baker Long, of Thompsontown. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bessie (Nankeville) Long, one daughter, Mrs. William H. (Edith) Hamil of Valley City, North Dakota, one son , Robert C. Long, of Mount Union, and two grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Robert Wadsworth of Harrisburg, Mrs. Amos Stouffer, of Lewistown; four brothers, Hayes Long of Yeagertown, Norman Long of Altoona, Merton Long of Port Royal, and Clark Long of Ridley Park, Pa. He was member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, I.O.O.F. of Mifflin, and a member of the Mifflin Borough School Board having been elected four successive terms and for the past 27 years op a barber shop in Mifflin. Mr. Long served his apprenticeship with his brother, William Long , until 1909 when he bought the business and since that time has been operating same until the time of his death.
