McMeen, Merchant and Civic Leader, Dies on Easter Founder of Leading Department Store, Bank Official and Active Churchman Succumbs at Age 75. WAS NATIVE OF JUNIATA COUNTY Business Venture in Mifflin So Successful He Opened Similar Establishment Here Elmer E McMeen, founder of Lewistown’s leading department store, bank official, active churchman and prominent civic leader, passed away Sunday afternoon at 5:15 o’clock, aged 75 years, 3 months, 24 days. The cause of his death was a complication of diseases brought about by infirmities of age. He had been bedfast for the past eight weeks. The funeral will be held at his late residence, 117 Woods’ Avenue, Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock in charge of his pastor, Rev. Dr. Henry A. Riddle, assisted by Rev. James Martin, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown. Interment will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call at the home after 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the funeral service. Mr. McMeen was born in Turbett Township, Juniata County, December 4, 1861, the son of Samuel R. and Hannah Rice McMeen. He was educated in the public schools of his home county and in 1879 he went to Illinois and farmed there until 1881, when he returned to Juniata County. In 1882 he worked in the store of his brother-in-law, Charles McCormick, at Port Royal and for the next three years in the store of T.J. Middagh at Patterson, now Mifflin. From 1885 until 1892 he was in partnership with W.M. Beale. He then withdrew from the partnership and conducted a store at Huntingdon until 1893. On December 5, 1893, he opened a general merchandise business in Mifflin in which he was so successful that in 1900 he established a similar store in Lewistown uner the name of E.E. McMeen and Company of which his cousin, Hugh B. McMeen, became manager. In 1926 Mr. McMeen sold his business in Mifflin and moved to Lewistown. Mr. McMeen was elected a county auditor of Juniata County in 1890 and served as a member and secretary of the school board of his school district while residing in Juniata County. Mr. McMeen was one of the founders of the Peoples National Bank of Mifflin of which he was a member of the board of directors until the time of his death. He was also one of the founders of Lewistown Trust Company, served on its board of directors and was president of the board for a number of years, holding that office at the time of his death. He was a life-long member of Westminster Presbyterian Church until he moved to Lewistown, when he transferred his membership to First Presbyterian Church. He was an active member of the Mifflintown church and was serving as the president of the board of trustees of the Lewistown church when death called him. Mr. McMeen was also a member of Baraca Men’s Bible Class of his church, taught by W.P. Woods. He was a faithful attendant at the services of his church and took a deep personal interest in all of its activities. Mr. McMeen was a member of Union Lodge, 324, Free and Accepted Masons, of Mifflintown, also a member of the Mifflintown Lodge of Odd Fellows. He was a member of Lewistown Rotary Club and an active member of both the Mifflintown and Lewistown Chambers of Commerce, serving as a member of the board of the latter organization at the time of his death. In 1884, Mr. McMeen married Miss Sarah Lesh, daughter of Daniel Lesh of Port Royal. Mrs. McMeen died November 28, 1935. To this union one son was born, A. Ralph McMeen.
