Shope, 84, of 446 Snook Road, McClure, passed away at 2:21 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at his home. He was born Oct. 12, 1938, in Bellefonte, a son of the late Ralph Leonard and Esther (Dobson) Shope. On Nov. 15, 1959, he married Helen Louise (Musser) Shope, who resides at their home. Along with his wife, he is also survived by: a daughter, Nickie L. (Shope) Stoltzfus and husband, Wayne E., of McClure; a granddaughter, Karly Elizabeth Freeman and husband, Ross, of Godley, TX; and a brother, Ralph Shope, of Houserville, PA. Stanley was a 1957 graduate of Penns Valley High School. Following his graduation, he attended Penn State for Physical Education. Earlier in life, he was employed at Penn Nursery for four years prior to his employment at Penn State. In 1963, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served his country for three years while stationed in Fort Rucker, AL. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he then returned to Penn State as the stadium maintenance manager and his duties included maintaining the football field and campus grounds. In 1971, he became the assistant equipment manager for the Penn State football team and remained in this position for 10 years then he was promoted to head equipment manager and Nike Representative and remained in this position until his retirement in 2001. Stanley ended his career with 41 years of service to Penn State University. He had a passion for calf roping and team roping and was a member of numerous organizations associated with his passion. They included the American Professional Rodeo Assoc., the Rodeo Cowboys Assoc., and the Timed Event Roping Assoc. He and his wife attended the Assembly of God Church in State College as well as participated in online services for Cross Country Cowboy Church in Columbia, TN, where they became good friends with the Pastor, AK Robinson and his wife, Joanna. He was a great racquet ball player and participated in numerous tournaments. He also enjoyed playing softball. A Celebration of Life service will be held in his honor at a later date.
