Earl Sunderland, of Vineyard, Mifflin county and a former resident of this city, made the supreme sacrifice for his country on the battlefront in France. He was killed in action somewhere in the vicinity of Chateau Thierry on July 4. He was aged 23 years and for several years made his this city his home. He was employed for a time by Nelson, Morris & Co. He volunteered to follow the flag on April 29, 1917, and was assigned to the coast artillery but later was transferred to the Thirty-eighth infantry, being assigned to the machine gun company and he was rapidly promoted to the rank of sergeant. He has two brothers in the city, Clark W., and J. Clarence Sunderland, both residing on the East Side. Altoona Tribune, Friday morning, August 30, 1918, page 12
