Wertz Was Killed June 2 Special to the Tribune. Lewistown, Pa., June 12. - Gunnery Sergeant James Clair Wertz, whose name appears among the killed in action list this morning was a son of the late Jack Wertz, a locomotive engineer who was killed in a wreck at the north end of the railroad bridge spanning the Juniata river between here and Lewistown Junction twenty years ago. The young man was only eight months old at the time of his father's death. Sergeant Wertz served an enlistment in the army and enlisted in the navy about a year ago and was soon awarded a medal for marksmanship. A letter received from him only a short time ago said he was acting as secretary to the captain while on board. A telegram received by friends here says the young man was killed in action on June 2nd. Altoona Tribune, Thursday morning, June 13, 1918, page 3
