She was the daughter of the late Maurice and Eva McCoy Ammon and was born in Lewistown, Pennsylvania on April 19, 1914. After graduating from McVeytown Oliver High School, Mildred earned her Teaching Certificate from Shippensburg State College. Her teaching career started at Lake Park Elementary School. She later taught at Burhnam Elementary where she was also building principal. She retired in 1975 after forty years of service. She was an active member of the Mifflin County Retired Teachers Association and of Delta Kappa Gamma. Her long life spanned many technological changes, social changes and historical moments in this country. Her recollections of the Great Depression and her early life were always of great interest. Mildred was a lifelong member of Wesley Chapel Methodist Church at Lockport and was active at Spring Run Church of the Brethren in McVeytown. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marion Wallace Smith, of Stone Valley, Huntingdon County in 1946. She married Roy D. Wilson in 1967 who passed away in July of 1981. She and Roy enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their home at 56 Flower Drive, McVeytown. Hardly a weekend went by that they were not having a picnic or food fest of some sort with their group of friends. They enjoyed gardening and outdoor work around the property. They traveled extensively with friends to Africa, Russia, Germany and Scandinavian Countries. Mildred was an inspiration to all that knew and loved her. She adored her children and grandchildren, always putting their needs and desires above her own. She was a faithful friend and confidant. Her legacy to the teaching profession will live on through the hundreds of children whose lives she touched in Mifflin County. She is survived by: her sons Charles M. Smith and wife Carol of Marietta, Georgia; Robert Wilson of Lewistown; daughter Linda Matter and husband Gary of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren: Michael Smith and wife Sarah of Seattle, Washington; Jennifer Morris and husband Jeff of Omaha, Nebraska; Jason Matter and wife Jill of Denver, Colorado; and four great-grandchildren: Caroline and Macie Smith, Jackson and Cooper Morris. A memorial service will be scheduled in several weeks to take place at Spring Run Church of the Brethren.
