Stroudsburg Times, Pub date: Thursday, September 24, 1891 Gulick - Dr. W. J. Gulick, son of Williamson and Charlotte Gulick, one of Stroudsburg's most accomplished and successful physicians, died at his late residence on Main Street, on Sunday morning of chronic gastritis and pneumonia combined. His health had been gradually failing for some time. Soon after his confinement it became apparent that his condition was critical and although the best medical aid was given attainable and every thing possible done for his recovery, yet without avail. The deceased was born near Lacon, Marshall Co., Ill., Jan. 22nd, 1844. At the age of two and a half years his father was killed. Soon after his mother, nee Charlotte VanBuskirk, removed with him to this county, he being the only surviving child of six children. His grandfather, William VanBuskirk, became his ward, to whom he was indebted for his early education. At the age of 18 he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. Reeves Jackson. In March, 1865, he graduated with the highest honors at the University of Pennsylvania. The following year he spent at Bellevue Hospital. He first practiced medicine at Ashley near Wilkesbarre in the mining district, where he remained three years; then found a more lucrative field at Vienna and North Lancing, N.Y., where he remained until the summer of 1881, when he came to Stroudsburg. On January 22nd, 1880, he married Esther Wintermute, at which time he was practicing in New York State. Soon after this union, his mother becoming aged and infirm, he felt it a duty to be near her and removed to this place. The Doctor had endeared himself to every community in which he practiced and had hosts of friends. He was a most conscientious physician, fully realizing that he was treating an immortal soul, and felt that there was a great responsibility resting upon him. He was very sympathetic and frequently gave words of encouragement to young men making a start in life and gave his experience in fighting the battles of life which were many and varied. Believing that with close application and trusting in Him who doeth all things well, success is assured. The Doctor had been engaged in practice about 26 years. He died at the age of 47 years, 7 months and 28 days. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, and half sister, Mrs. Susie Miller, who have the sympathy of a wide circle of warm friends. The funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by his cousin, Rev. S. G. Hutchinson. The remains may be viewed at his late residence from 12 to 2 p.m. Interment at the Union Cemetery. The deceased was born Aug. 11, 1828 and was aged 63 years, 1 month and 10 days. She reared twelve children of whom ten survive to mourn her sudden departure. The subject of this sketch was a faithful and devoted mother, a good neighbor and a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church for thirty-five years. She will be missed in the community and church, but most by the bereaved children. She toiled and suffered quietly and uncomplainingly during the years that have fled, as she followed her daily rounds of duty; but the time came suddenly when the weary step and throbbing heart ceased their work, and mother was not for the Lord took her." Stroudsburg Times, Pub date: Thursday, December 10, 1891 Lowry - Obituary - We feel assured that the announcement of the death of Mrs. Margaret E. Lowry will be received by many of our readers with manifest regret. Mrs. Lowry was in ill-health during the winter of 1890, at which time she labored so successfully in our midst. Since then she has been growing worse until on Wednesday last, Dec. 2nd, death released her from her sufferings. During her protracted illness she frequently made mention of her work in Stroudsburg and alluded personally to many of the converts of that season. Mrs. Lowry first appeared before the public as a actress, but about twenty years ago God's Holy Spirit convinced her that she was pursuing a wrong course of life and yielding to His convictions she deliberately renounced the state with all its associations and having given herself to God, from that time she concentrated her talents and her energies upon the work of the Lord. Many of us can testify to her ability as an evangelist, and we rejoice for her, that the days of her mourning are now ended and that she has already entered into the rest that remaineth for the people of God. - E. H. P." Stroudsburg Times, Pub date: Thursday, December 10, 1891 Merring - Obituary - "Mr. Lavere Merring, a highly esteemed young man of Stroud township, met with a serious accident while gunning on Thursday, Nov 26th, 1891. While loading one barrel the contents of the second was accidentally discharged into his chest. He lived until Saturday at 9 a.m. when he died the death of the righteous. He was converted in the revival services held at Wesley Chapel last spring. Though his sufferings were intensely severe he was conscious up to nearly the last hour of life and improved every opportunity of warning the unsaved and inciting the Christians to greater degrees of activity. The greatest satisfaction in the final hours of life were that he gave his heart to Christ and that he never took a glass of liquor. God's grace was sufficient for him and he died with a consciousness that he would soon be at the stream drinking the waters of life. His funeral was more largely attended than any in the vicinity for years." He held several township and county offices, an accommodating and pleasant neighbor, always willing and ready to do a friend a favor. He leaves a wife and two children in good circumstances. We had the pleasure of uniting him in the bonds of matrimony, and other circumstances, which endeared him and his family to our hearts, which will never be erased. In his declining health as the world receded from his view and the certainty of death was apparent, he was heard to pray and was interested in reference to the future. Over sixty years of her life has been spent in Stroudsburg and vicinity. She was born and received her early education in Monmouth county, New Jersey. Her father, Thomas Potts was of the old school Presbyterians, under whose influence she received her early religious training. After coming to Stroudsburg in company with her brother, the Rev. James V. Potts, a Methodist minister, she married the late George W. Brown who died Jan., 1861, aged 54 years. Both she and her husband connected themselves for a number of years with the Methodist Episcopal Church in this place. Later on becoming firm believers in the religious doctrines of Friends, they united in membership with that Society, and for over forty years she has been an earnest and consistent member, always attending meetings when her health would permit; often having a word of good counsel for those present. Although a Friend in profession, speech and apparel, she enjoyed the meetings of other denominations, and was ever ready to lend a helping hand. Socially she was a most agreeable companion; a pleasant talker, always ready to converse upon the subjects of most interest to those with whom she came in contact and all who knew her learned to love her. Although ripe in years yet she was blessed up to the time of her death with remarkable use of all her mental faculties. She was a great reader of good literature and kept well posted upon the current news of the day. Four sons and two daughters, twenty grand-children and eight great-grand-children survive her. The children are Michael R., James P., William V., and Martha G. Huntsman, her youngest daughter from whom she has never been separated during her life, all of Stroudsburg, Emma B. The stone were hauled from Kunkletown and in going up the hill from that village the teamsters were in the habit of walking to lessen the load for the teams. Mr. Correll had just ascended the hill, taken his seat and gone but a few rods when he fell from the wagon, the heavy wheels of which run over his head crushing it into a jelly. His companions went to his assistance, but when he was picked up, he was found to be dead, having been killed instantly. He had been subject to spells of dizziness for the past year and it is supposed he became dizzy and fell with the above results. He was about 65 years of age and leaves a wife and two grown up sons to mourn his sad and tragic death." Keller, a prominent citizen of this place died of dysentery early last Thursday morning, after an illness of a little over four days. Mr. Keller who for the past three months had ben traveling in the interest of a New York Gas firm returned home last Saturday evening from an extended trip to California and the territories, feeling fairly well and in his usual good spirits. A few hours after his arrival he was tken sick and soon alarming symptoms developed. The deceased was born in Stroudsburg, March 8th, 1848. His education was received in the public schools of this place and at the Kingston Pa., Seminary. At the age of 13 he was converted and connected himself with the Methodist Episcopal church, of Stroudsburg, and for the past 15 years was an active member of the Presbyterian church. A short time of his early boyhood days was spent in Philadelphia as a drug clerk. When 21 years of age he engaged in the dry goods business in this town. A few years later he took his younger brother Prof. J. E. M. Keller, into the business as partner and the firm was styled Keller & Bro. Having, however, but little taste for the mercantile business, and notwithstanding the fact that he had almost unlimited capital to carry on the business successfully, he decided to close out his business and engage in something more to his liking. In 1875 he accepted the superintendency of the Stroudsburg Gas Co., and a short time afterwards became its sole owner. About three years ago the entire plant was burned to the ground. It proved to be a most disastrous and fatal loss to Mr. Keller, there being no insurance on the peoperty, and the savings of years of hard laor were consumed by fire in less than an hour's time. About the only thing left out of the ruins was the pipe underground, which was of little value to a man without the proper means to rebuild. About two years after the fire Mr. Keller interested New York parties and the present Monroe County Gas Co., was organized, of which he was a stockholder and elected superintendent which place he filled up to the time of his death. The deceased was a most practical gas man and understood his business thoroughly. So thorough was his knowledge of the business that Van Sickle and Co. of New York City, gas plant builders engaged his services a short time ago, and it was understood that he could remain permanently in their employ if he had lived and so desired. For over 15 years he was Chief of the Fire Department and did good service. He was a man who never saw danger ahead and in the hottest of fires he was found with the bravest fighting the flames. The deceased was married twice. His first wife was Miss Anna Hoffman of Asbury Park, N. J. In 1876 he married Miss Jennie Sandford of Stroudsburg. He leaves a widow and three children. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum Lodge, and in politics was a strong Republican. The death of Mr. Keller will be keenly felt in this community where he was know best. Although an impulsive mand he enjoyed the friendship of a large circle of friends. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Center street at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and the burial took place at the Union cemetery, followed by a large number of relatives and friends and the Royal Arcanum and Fire Company. After which services were conducted at the Presbyterian church." Stroudsburg Times, Pub date: Thursday, July 7, 1892 Baker - "The funeral ceremonies of Wm. T.
