Scheidt Johann Christian Scheidt 1736-1821 Johann Christian Scheidt, born in Morefeld, Europe, arrived in America on Oct 23, 1754, ship Snow Good Intent, Master John Lasly. He married Marie Elizabeth Meu/May in 1759 at the Old Goshenhoppen Church, Montgomery County, Pa. They had six sons and three daughters. Christian was an elder of this church for many years and both he and Elizabeth are buried at the Old Goshenhoppen Cemetery as Scheidt. In their marriage record there he is given as Sheitt. Following that event all other records of this church list his family as Scheid until his death. German pronunciation of this name is the same with or without the "t". The source for church records are by William John Hinke, "A History of the Old Goshenhoppen Charge, Montgomery County". Christian, and some of his family, have the oldest recorded Scheidt tombstones in America, and are registered and viewable on Findagrave.com. Other family members buried at this cemetery include son Daniel 1783, Jacob 1776, and daughter Christina 1774. Grandsons Henrich 1797, Jacob 1823, John 1806, and Peter 1816. Christian served in the Revolutionary War as a quartermaster, Capt. Phillip Gabel's 2nd Co., 5th Batt. Col. Hiester, 1777. Also serving with Christian were neighbors Henry Schneider and Daniel Kreider. He also served as a county commissioner for several terms. Christian died Jan 13, 1821. Nearly all of his descendants eventually became Shade, only grandson Jacob, son of Christian Jr., continued the Scheidt variation from Kutztown, Pa. After 1840 there were many immigrants using this name variation, and also Scheide and Scheid. Most well known of later Scheidt immigrants was Adam who founded the Adam Scheidt Brewery in Norristown, Pa. After the death of wife Marie Elizabeth in 1793, Christian married Barbara Faber Rose, widow of Rev. Theobald Faber, pastor at Goshenhoppen. Barbara died in 1831 and is buried with Rev. Faber in the New Goshenhoppen Cemetery as Scheidt. In her obituary of Feb 27, 1831, she is given as the widow of Christian Sr. verifying that there was a Christian Jr. The obituary was published in "Der Bauren Freund", a periodical publication of Sumneytown, Montgomery County. Records of a Christian Jr. with an age for Christian Sr. first appear in church records at Christ Mertz Church, Rockland, Berks, Pa. He and wife Susanna Bauer/Bower are parents at a babtism of Johannes in 1796. They had another son Jacob 1792, for whom no original birth record were found. When son Jacob died in 1867, his parents were given as Christian and Susanna Bower in his burial record. Later in 1823, a will was filed in Montgomery County by a Christian Scheid naming wife Susanna and son Jacob. Son Johannes did not appear in records as an adult. No burial records were found for Christian Jr., Susanna or Johannes. Jacob is buried at Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown, Pa.
