Two Autograph Letters from General Peter Muhlenberg, a member of the Assembly, to Israel Bringhurst, great-grandfather of the exhibitor, as follows: March 11, 1798. Dear Sir; I have received your note and am sorry to hear that you are unwell, but not so much on my own account as yours. If you had called upon me to day, you would have dined or rock fish &c etc., in company with good democrats, thus you see what you have lost by pretending to be sick. The election District passed the House, unanimously on Friday last. It will be discussed in the Senate on Tuesday next. Your letter had the desired effect. * * * These, confounded Democrats push the bowl so briskly that I can hardly see to write, and can therefore only say God bless you if possible. Yours P. MUHLENBERG. PHILADELPHIA, March 26,1798. Dear Sir: Yours of the 14th did not reach my hands until this morning. The fate of our election districts, you are by this time undoubtedly acquainted with. The bill passed our house without opposition, but in the Senate, through the intrigues of Messrs. Potts and Evans, it was amended in such a manner that its original features were totally lost. They fixed districts at ____ and one at Pottsgrove the other at Snyder's was to be abolished. In this way it stood. But finding the amendment stood no chance in our house, they postponed the bill generally, so that it now sleeps, and is at rest: hoping for a joyful resurrection. * * * Fate and destiny combined with the aristocrats are hurrying us precipitately into a ruinous and bloody war, and the chance of escape is a slender one indeed. You will see by the papers, that an attempt was made in our house to instruct our Senators in Congress to maintain the peace if possible, but strange to tell, all the Quakers, Old Tories &c voted against it; so that they are for war and the fighting men for Peace. A Report is in circulation that our Ministers in Great Britain have concluded an alliance offensive and defensive with that nation, how true I know not. You can see by this scrawl that I am not very well calculated for writing this day. With respect and esteem I am dear sir Your most obedient servant. P. MUHLENBERG. Perkiomen Bridge Lottery Ticket. The present bridge structure over the Perkiomen creek at Collegeville was built by the county of Montgomery. In order to raise the necessary funds, the Legislature of Pennsylvania, February 21, 1797, passed an act "for raising by way of lottery the sum of twenty thousand dollars to build this bridge." Twenty thousand tickets were sold. One of them is in possession of the exhibitor, and reads as follows: No. 246. PERKIOMEN BRIDGE LOTTERY. Class the First. Newspaper, dated 1800. In morning for Washington. Simpson, Thomas C., Norristown. Original Letter, written and signed by George Washington, as follows: HEADQUARTERS, VALLEY FORGE, 15 March, 1778. Sir- I yesterday rec'd a letter from Governor Wharton enclosing copy of one from you to the Council on the subject of keeping five or six Gallies manned for the protection of the upper part the river. The Governor has very politely left the matter to my determination, but I would not wish to interfere in a Business which is out of my line any further than by giving my advice. I cannot help thinking now, as I did before, that should the Enemy come to the River, they will do it with a superior force, and certainly carry them. But Captain Huston thinks, with the assistance of a small work on shore, under cover of which they can run in case of necessity, that they may be protected. I would wish you to consult Governor Livingston and gentlemen in the naval line upon this matter, and do what to you seems best. But you will not fall to secure the Guns and Stores of those Gallies that you stop, in the safest manner, until means can be fallen upon to carry them away. I am, sir, your most obed't serv't, Go: WASHINGTON. Favor Capt. Huston. Review, March ye 17, 1778. Sisler, Mrs. Edmund, Pottstown. Bible, over 100 years old. Slifer, Dr. H. F., North Wales.
