It appears that Mr. Oliver Y Kugler, who resides near Jeffersonville, had been to this Borough in a two-horse wagon. On his way home one of his horses became frightened, tore loose form the wagon and ran away. In consequence of the large number of passengers, an extra coach came down on the morning above named. When about a mile above this Borough, they were met by the running horse, which passed the first coach, but ran directly against the leaders of the hind one. The force of the shock prostrated the running horse, and pushed the others down the embankment of the side road. The wheels passed over the prostate animal, which threw the coachover the embankment. The driver, Mr. REESE WHITEMAN, jumped fro the coach as it was turning over, but, unfortunatelly, fell, and received a very severe fracture of one of his limbs, just below the knee. The fractured limb was dressed by Dr WILLIAMS, of this Borough, assisted by DRs. CARSON and NUGENT. The coach was full of passengers, including men, women and children, all of whom were more or less scratched, but fortunately none were seriously injured. April 24, 1855 Died - Mr. REESE WHITEMAN, the stage-driver whom we noticed as having had his leg badly fractured by the upsetting of a stage-coach, between this Borough and Jeffersonville, a few weeks since, died from the effects of his injuries on Friday night last. Mortification took place, when the limb was amputated, but which proved to no avail. He was buried in the Baptist burying ground on Sunday. - - - - -- -- - - - -- - - - - - -- - - - - --- -- - -- - The above was sent to Eugene Bond on Feb.25, 1994 from the Hist.Soc.of Montg.County by Judith A.Meier Ms. Mier also added that she checked the records from Treemount Cemetery in the east end of town and it does not contain Reese Whiteman's name. Possible no marker. The son of REESE WHITEMAN, Wm.Arnold Whiteman served in 15th Inf from WV, Wheeling during the Civil WAR. Because of several other records we believe the stage coach drivers name was Thomas Rees Whiteman. William Arnold Whiteman married Margaret Hill of Boggs Run, Marshall Co. WVA.
