SIXTY-SEVENTH REGIMENT, P. V. (Three years service.) This regiment was organized at camp, at Camac's Woods, near Philadelphia, under John F. Staunton, Colonel; Horace B. Burnham, Lieutenant-Colonel; and Harry White, Major; John R. Young being appointed Adjutant. The companies were mustered at various times; the date of the first being August 28th, 1861. On the third of April, 1862, the command moved from camp, to Annapolis, Maryland, where, for nearly a year, it remained in performance of provost and railroad guard duty, and in guarding the camp for paroled prisoners, which was established near the town. In February, 1863, it was relieved, and proceeded to Harpers Ferry, where it performed garrison and guard duty for some weeks, and was then transferred to, Berryville, where it was attached to the Third Brigade, under General Milroy; Colonel McReynolds being the brigade commander, to whom was assigned the duty of keeping open communication with Harper Ferry, of watching Snicker's and Ashby's Gaps, of the Blue, Ridge, and Berry's and Snicker's Fords, of the Shenandoah, and in this duty, nearly three months passed without an incident to break the monotony of the routine. But, on Friday, the twelfth of June, orders were received from General Milroy, to hold the brigade in readiness to retire, at a preconcerted signal, and reinforce him at, Winchester. It was understood that these orders were in consequence of the enemy having been reported as marching down the Valley in force. The next morning, at eight o'clock, four cannon shots-a agreed on-gave McReynolds the order to move, hot the enemy were already in sight on the Millwood road. This made it prudent to make a detour, by way of Bunker Hill, but even this did not, avoid him, and a sharp attack was made on the column by the rebel cavalry, under Jenkins. It was, however, repulsed, with some loss, and the brigade reached Winchester at ten P. M. in a pouring rain, and during the night was placed in position in and around the Star fort, northwest of the town; the Sixty-seventh being posted in the rifle-pits, in advance of, and flanking the fort. At noon, on Sunday, the regiment was ordered to relieve the eighty-seventh Pennsylvania, which was sharply skirmishing with the enemy, on the south of the town. There it held the foe in check until evening, when it was withdrawn to the first position, at the fort. It lead become evident that the attack did not proceed from a raiding party of cavalry, but from the advance of Lee's army, moving toward, Pennsylvania. So orders were given for evacuation of the place, and the troops, moved out at two O'clock A. M. without artillery or trains; those being all abandoned. When only four miles out, they were opened on by a heavy fire of artillery. The Sixty-seventh and another regiment were deployed from the right, and becoming separated from the remainder of the command, found themselves suddenly in the midst of the main body of the rebels. They made a determined stand, but resistance was hopeless, and the Sixty-seventh had no other alternative but surrender. The enlisted men suffered about two months imprisonment, at Libby, and at Belle Isle, and were then paroled and transferred to Annapolis. The captured officers were not liberated for more than a year, About seventy-five men of the regiment escaped capture, by stealing away, singly, through the woods, and these, reporting to Milroy, at Harpers Perry, were reorganized and incorporated with the Third Division. These remained fortifying and defending Maryland Heights until June 30th, when the command moved to Washington, as a guard to ammunition and ordnance trains. From Washington it moved to join the army, then at Frederick. On the eleventh of October, the prisoners were declared exchanged, and returned to the ranks, at the camp in vicinity of Brandy Station, where the regiment took its winter quarters. During the winter the veterans were furloughed in a body, taking their arms; and the remainder, about two hundred, were merged with the Owe Hundred and Thirty-fifth Pennsylvania. The veterans having returned to duty, Colonel Staunton was directed to take command of the post of Fredericksburg, with instruction., to proceed to Port Royal, so soon as the sick and wounded had been removed from the post. Quickly followed another order directing him to proceed to White House, the new base. An immense wagon train, belonging to Sheridan, who was then raiding towards Lynchburg, was lying at White House, and the enemy's cavalry, in heavy force, attempted its capture about, daybreak; on the thirtieth of June. The regiment was here kept under artillery fire, during the entire day, but the next morning Sheridan himself arrived, and the train was saved. From White House the regiment was ordered to join its old brigade, at Yellow House, in front of Petersburg. While lying there it participated in the battle of Reams Station, and repulsed the enemy. Again the command was embarked on transports, and proceeded to Baltimore, to act, against Early, who had invaded Maryland. The Sixty-seventh proceeded to New Market, but thence returned to Relay House, near Baltimore. Afterwards, the entire summer was passed in marching and countermarching through Maryland and northern Virginia-hard, arduous duty, without the excitement of battle. But in the autumn, warmer work fell to its lot, In the battle of Opequan, September 19th, the Sixty-seventh lost very severely. It went into the engagement with but two commissioned officers (Lieutenants), the companies being in command of sergeants. At Fishers Hill, the regiment was only called in to join in the pursuit, after the enemy had been driven from his works; following him to Harrisonburg, whence, after a few days rest, it again retired with the army to Cedar Creek. At that point, on the morning of the, nineteenth of October, at daybreak, the enemy fell, in heavy force, on the left, and the battle became general. The Eighth Corps was driven back in confusion, and, shortly after, the same date, befell the nineteenth; and even the Sixth Corps, which was in position, to check the retreat, failed it, its purpose, and the whole army was soon in retreat, covered by the Sixth. It looked liked a day of disaster, if not, of utter rout, when suddenly, the little Commander was seen, spurring his black horse along the disordered line. He had been absent, in Winchester, twenty mile, away and now his appearance on the field was like the arrival of a fresh corps of veterans. "Boys, we are going back to camp," he shouted, and the boys, when they heard his words, never for a moment doubted them. And back to their camp of the night, before they went, with Early's army in a confused rout, "whirling up the Valley" before their victorious sweep. The loss of the Sixty-seventh, on this day, was forty-eight. The remainder of the year the regiment remained in the Valley, participating in the various movements there, but in the latter part of December, was ordered to rejoin the Army of the Potomac, at Petersburg, where it lay during the winter, and on the opening of the spring, saw the closing operations, of the war, and was present at the closing scenes at Appomattox Court House. After Lee's surrender, it marched to Danville, Virginia, front, of Johnston; but, after he, too, had laid down his sword, the boys returned, to Washington, and were mustered out of the service there, July 14th, 1861. The soldiers who entered the Sixty-seventh, from Northampton county, belonged to "H" Company, the roll of which is given here. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTH REGIMENT, P. V. ELEVENTH CAVALRY. (Three year's service) This regiment was originally known as "Harlan's Light Cavalry," raised in August, 1861, and organized on the fifth of October in the same year, under Colonel Josiah Harlan, Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel B. Spear, and Majors George Stetzel, Samuel Wetherill, and Noah M. Runyon. On the sixteenth of October, the command went into camp near Balls Cross Roads, Virginia, the name of its camp being Camp Palmer, in honor of it, brigade commander, General I. N. Palmer. November 17th, the regiment marched to Annapolis, whence it was transported by water to Camp Hamilton, near Fortress Monroe, and there went into winter quarters. On the fifteenth of May, 1862, a detachment of five companies, "A," "E," "G," "H" and "L," under Lieutenant-Colonel Spear, was ordered to Portsmouth, and thence, a few weeks later, to Suffolk, Va., the remainder of the regiment proceeding to White House; but, in August, rejoined Spears detachment at Suffolk. Colonel Spear acceded to command of the regiment, in August, on the resignation of Colonel Harlan. The Eleventh remained at Suffolk, and along the Blackwater Rivet, for nearly a year, during which time it was on constant duty in scouting, skirmishing, and reconnaissance. On the second of December, a battalion made a brilliant charge at Beaver Dam Church, completely routing the enemy, taking twenty-five prisoners, and recapturing a part of a rocket battery which the rebels had taken from McClellan in the Seven Days'. On the thirtieth of January, 1863, at Deserted House, and on the Seventeenth of March succeeding, at Franklin, the regiment fought with great bravery. During its long stay at Suffolk, it scouted, again and again, over the entire country, from the James to the waters of Albemarle Sound, in North Carolina. On the twenty-first of June, the Eleventh embarked at Portsmouth, and was transported to White House, whence it marched to Hanover Court House, for the purpose of destroying the Virginia Central Railroad Bridge, over the South Anna River, which object was accomplished after a severe fight with the enemy, in which the rebel Fitz Hugh Lee was captured. On the first of July, the regiment marched front White House with an expedition under General Getty, to destroy bridges on the Fredericksburg Railroad for the purpose of severing communication with Lee, who was then in Pennsylvania, this, however, was unsuccessful; about the tenth of July, the Eleventh marched to Hampton, and was thence transported to Portsmouth, going into camp at Bower's Hill, seven miles south of the town, on the Suffolk road. On the twenty-fifth of July, the regiment, under the command of Major Wetherill, raided into North Carolina, to destroy the railroad bridge at Weldon. The enemy was met at Jackson, strongly posted, and could not be dislodged. Major Wetherill's force returned to camp on the second of August unsuccessful, as to the object of the raid, but having captured forty prisoners and a large number of horses. Similar raids and expeditions by water, were made by the Eleventh until the latter part of January, 1864, when it proceeded to Williamsburg, as part of an expedition against, Richmond, but as information was conveyed to the enemy by a deserter, the command returned to Portsmouth. Commencing on the fifth of May, the regiment, as part of a cavalry column, raided into the enemy s country, destroying bridges over the Nottoway River, and fighting at Jarret's Station, traveling three hundred miles, in six days, with a loss of twelve, killed and wounded. For two months succeeding this, the Eleventh was almost constantly on raiding duty against the Weldon, the South Side, and Danville Railroads, in which great, damage was inflicted. It, also participated in the fight at Jerusalem Plank Road, June 9th, and in those of Stony Creek and Ream's Station, on the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth. The loss of the regiment, in the raid and these two actions, was one hundred and thirty, killed, wounded, and missing. Five hundred miles, were marched over in ten days, including the time engaged in the fights. In July, the Eleventh was attached to the command of Sheridan, and was present in the severe engagement of the twenty-ninth. From the eighteenth to the twenty-fifth of August, it was engaged in till the obstinate fights along the Weldon Railroad, of which, that at, Ream's Station was one of the principal. Company "H." had during these, been absent on duty at headquarters of the Eighteenth Corps, but rejoined the regiment on the twenty-eighth of September. The new Spencer repeating carbine was now issued to the men, and on the morning of the twenty-ninth, the Eleventh started on an important raid to the north side of the James, in which an attempt was made to enter Richmond, but no results followed. In the cavalry engagement of the seventh of October, the regiments loss was quite severe. Major Titus, Captain Bacon, and Lieutenants Barber and Beer were captured; the Major being severely wounded. In November, the Eleventh went into winter quarters, two miles north of the James River. In February, it made a raid into Surrey and Isle of Wight counties, but returned with no scalps. On the twenty-eighth of March, it left camp and crossed the James and Appomattox rivers, to commence the final campaign. At Five Forks and White Oak Road engagements, the Eleventh bore its full share. In the succeeding days it took part at Deep Creek and Amelia Court House, and at the final engagement at Appomattox it opened the attack. It was of short continuance. The enemy, driven back, and encircled by the Union forces, found further resistance useless, and that his four years of privation and labor and blood had been in vain. On the twelfth, the regiment took possession of Lynchburg, and the immense amount of ordnance and other property. Leaving Lynchburg, the regiment marched by way of Burkesville to Richmond, arriving on the twenty-fourth of April, and leaving again, on the sixth of May, for Staunton. From that place, it soon returned to Charlottesville, which it reached on the sixteenth, and was stationed there, and in the surrounding country, until about the first of August, when it moved to Richmond, where it was mustered out of service August 13th, 1865. V. - TWELFTH CAVALRY. (Three years service.) The Twelfth Cavalry was organized in the city of Philadelphia, in November, 1861. Its field-officers were Colonel William Frishmuth, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis B. Pierce, and Majors Jacob Kohler, Darius Titus, and James A. Congdon. Before, leaving Philadelphia, however, the Colonel resigned, which placed Colonel Pierce in command, with the full rank. About the first of May, 1862, the Twelfth proceeded to Washington, and on the twentieth of June, proceeded thence to Manassas Junction, on guard duty, along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. On the twenty-sixth of August, moved, under command of Major Titus, towards White Plains, under orders to ascertain the position and strength of the enemy there. Reaching the neighborhood of Gainesville, a picket was captured, and from him it, was learned that Stonewall Jackson, with half the Confederate army, was right in its front. The regiment retired towards Bristoe Station, but found the rebel force there before it. Major Titus then determined to cut his way out of the trap, but soon found his command attacked by the infantry and artillery of the rebels, with such vehemence, that it suffered a loss of two hundred and sixty in killed, wounded, and prisoners-along the latter being Major Titus himself. On file day following, the regiment was ordered to proceed to the upper Potomac, to picket and watch the north bank of the river, from Chain Bridge, to Edwards Ferry, until Lee entered Maryland, and the South Mountain and Antietam campaign commenced. Its, part in that campaign has already been noticed. About the twenty-fifth of September, it was assigned to McReynolds' Brigade, and participated in the raids to Moorfield and Woodstock, in the latter of which it fought the enemy cavalry at Fishers Hill, and there sustained considerable loss. Remaining in the Valley of the Shenandoah, it, was, on the advance of Lee, after Chancelorsville, ordered on a reconnoissance-June 12th-towards Front Royal, for the purpose of ascertaining whether the enemy was present in the Valley in force. Having advanced as far as Cedarville, the rebels were found in heavy force; open which Colonel Moss retired from their front, and returned to Winchester and reported the fact, which, however, was not believed by Milroy. He, too soon ascertained the truth of the report. Soon afterwards, it was again sent out, with other regiments, and a section of artillery, to reconnoitre on the Strasburg road. For three days they skirmished with the enemy's advance, which was found on the road, not far from Apple-pie Ridge. The reconnoitering force then fell back on Winchester, which was evacuated by Milroy in the night of the fourteenth. The army had not gone four miles towards the Potomac, when the enemy appeared, and a heavy night battle was fought, in which the Twelfth was engaged and sustained considerable loss, It, however, disentangled itself, and moved forward to Bloody Run, by way of Bath and Hancock. Two days after the battle of Gettysburg, the regiment, with a battalion of the First New York, fell upon Lees trains, at Cunningham's Cross Roads, capturing six hundred and forty of the train-guard, and taking one hundred and twenty-five wagons, five hundred and fifty animals, add three pieces of cannon. After this it moved to Sharpsburg and remained there until August 3d, when it crossed the Potomac, and moved to the vicinity of Martinsburg. Here it remained until the opening of the campaign of 1864, engaged in the usual operations of cavalry, scout and guard duty, with all occasional skirmish. Meanwhile, its members had nearly all re-enlisted, and received veteran furloughs. In the fights and skirmishes at Solomon's and Crampton's Gaps, and other places, which were had with the forces of Early, as he advanced down the Valley towards the invasion of Maryland, the Twelfth took prominent part. Its, gallantry, at Pleasant Valley, was especially commended. 124 Early, being severely handled in Maryland, soon came back and retreated till the Valley, passing through Snicker's Gap. Afterwards, however, he again faced northward and advanced towards the Potomac. On the twenty-fourth, he attacked Averill and Crook's commands, at Kernstown, and the battle raged during that and the first part of the following day, resulting in a decided rebel advantage. In these actions, and in the splendidly-delivered cavalry charge of Colonel Tibbitts' brigade, which checked the enemy's advance, the Twelfth was actively engaged. Colonel Tibbits, the brigade commander, in his report of that battle, said: "The commanding officers of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Cavalry, Lieutenant-Colonel William Bell, and of the Fifteenth New York Cavalry Colonel Bott, are deserving of much credit, for the brave and efficient manner in which they commanded their regiments, especially when their commands were dismounted, on the skirmish-line." Sheridan now came to the command of the Army of the Shenandoah, and the Twelfth fell in Torbert's Division. The army fell back to Berryville to avoid a flanking movement by the enemy who, on the twenty-first of August, attacked Sheridan with great persistency, but without gaining any advantage. In this engagement, the Twelfth performed its duty well, and at considerable loss. It was now recruited to ionic extent, and remounted, and Colonel Pierce resumed the command. It participated in the operations of the army during the fall, and afterwards returned to Charlestown, for guard and garrison duty, and for covering arid guarding the railroad from Harpers Ferry to Winchester. Here it remained until March; Colonel Pierce having, in the meantime, received his discharge, and Colonel Reno, a captain in the Regular Cavalry, having been placed in command of the regiment. About the middle of March, it was engaged in an expedition against the guerrillas, across the Blue Ridge, during which, in a fight at Harmony, it lost six killed and nineteen wounded. At the opening of the spring campaign of 1865, it was incorporated with the cavalry division of the Army of the Shenandoah, and its colonel, Reno, was made division commander, with this division, Reno was ordered to raid as far as Lynchburg. Arriving at Edinboro, a fight was had with the enemy, in which the Twelfth alone participated. Here was announced the surrender of Lee, including all the rebel troops in the Valley of the Shenandoah. Hostilities of course, ceased, and the Twelfth, after remaining a short time at Mount Jackson, Camped at Winchester, where it remained till the twentieth of July, 1865, on which day its officers and men were mustered out of the service, and thence returned to their homes. The names of its Northampton county members are given in the company roll below. COMPANY "D." (Nine month service) On the fifteenth of August, 1862, this regiment was organized under the following field officers: Colonel, Jacob G, Frick Lieutenant-Colonel, William B, Armstrong; of Northampton County Major, Joseph Anthony. The very next week it was hurried to Washington, and went into camp near Alexandria. On the thirtieth, it marched towards the front, as guard to an ammunition train bound to Centreville, Heavy cannonading had been heard throughout the day, growing louder and heavier as the regiment advanced, The train was delivered in safety, and soon after, towards sunset, it was for a time, exposed to a brisk artillery fire, its first war experience. Returning, its camp was changed to the neighborhood of Fort Richardson, and was assigned to duty in the brigade of General Tyler. On the fourteenth it was moved across the Potomac, and marching rapidly through Maryland, arrived at Antietam, on the morning succeeding the battle. On the thirtieth of October, it marched, with the army, into Virginia and to the town of Warrenton. Its participation in the bloody and unfortunate campaigns of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, has been noticed in the account of those battles. Its gallant behavior in the last-named fight was highly complimented in the official report of General Tyler. On the twelfth of May, the term of service had fully expired, and the regiment was ordered to Harrisburg, where, on the eighteenth of May, 1863, it was mustered out of service. Four of its companies were raised in Northampton county, the rolls of which, are here given, The return of these companies was greeted by the citizens, in the most enthusiastic and flattering manner.
