V. (Nine months service.) RECRUITED IN NORTHAMPTON COUNTY The organization of this regiment-which is here given in full-was effected on the ninth of October, 1862, at Camp Curtin. It was the only regiment in the service which was raised entirely in the county of Northampton. Its departure from Camp Curtin, for Washington, was made on the twelfth, and, a few days later, it was ordered to the vicinity of Gainesville, for duty in the First Brigade of the First Division of the Eleventh Army Corps. On the ninth of December, it was hurried away, with the brigade, towards Fredericksburg, where a battle was then imminent, but it did not arrive in time to join in the engagement. It participated, most gallantly, in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, which campaigns covered its military history, and which have already been noticed, as well as the most gratifying reception given by the people of the county, to the regiment, on its return home. TWO HUNDRED AND SECOND REGIMENT, P. V. (One years' service.) This regimental organization was effected on the third of September, 1864, at Camp Curtin. The field officers were: Colonel, Charles Albright Lieutenant-Colonel, John A. Maus Major, Walter H. Seip On the tenth, the regiment proceeded to Chambersburg, near which town it went into camp. Nineteen days later, it was moved to Alexandria, Va., by way of Washington, and was assigned to guard duty on the Manassas Gap Railroad. The service was both an arduous and a dangerous, one, on account of the guerrillas who infested that section, with the determined purpose of destroying the route of supply to the army of General Sheridan. On one occasion, when the bushwhacker, had placed obstructions on the track and wrecked a train, killing and wounding some twenty-five or thirty, and adding the barbarity of firing upon the maimed sufferers. Colonel Albright, on learning the facts, proceeded to the place with his force, and burned every building within a mile of the wreck, and afterwards, prominent rebels were, arrested and forced to accompany the trains, which measure had the desired effect. After Sheridan had cleared the Valley of the rebel forces, the railroad was abandoned and the rails removed, and the regiment was ordered to a similar duty on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, with headquarters at, Fairfax. Late in May 1865, the command was ordered to Philadelphia, and thence, sent by General Cadwalader, to the anthracite coal region, where it was variously distributed, its headquarters being at Tamaqua; remaining until ordered to Harrisburg for muster out, which was done on the third of August. Breckenridge Clemens, Lieutenant-Colonel Melchoir Horn, Major Edward D. Lawall, Adjutant This was one of the regiments called out for the emergency of Lee's first invasion of the North, in 1862. It contained five companies of Northampton men, of which, the rolls are given below. It was not called upon to enter the fire of battle, though it was, on the day of Antietam, within hearing of the artillery. Its term of service was short-less than two weeks-as the emergency passed away, and it was not needed; but that fact cannot in the least degree lessen the great credit due to its members, for the alacrity with which they responded to the Governors call for aid. It was discharged September 24th and 27th, 1862. COMPANY "A"-EASTON (organized September 11th and 13th, 1862; discharged September 24th and 27th, 1862) Captain, William B. Semple 1st Lieutenant, G. As showing the amounts paid, in bounty-money, to soldiers, and for substitutes, during the war, the following is extracted from a local newspaper of that time: "Local Bounties paid in the Eleventh D1strict, Pennsylvania.-To give our readers a slight idea of the amount of money paid by our District, during the Rebellion, we publish the following statement: "The amount of local bounties, paid in the various sub-districts in Northampton county for volunteers and substitutes, is as follows: Easton 120,732.00 South Easton 39,700.00 Allen (township) 20,605.00 Bethlehem (Borough) 81,365.00 Freemansburg 20,335.00 Bethlehem (Township) 66,603.00 Hanover 9,540.00 Bushkill 23,136.00 East Allen 36,081.00 Bath 15,200.00 Forks 20,936.00 Palmer 41,080.00 Lehigh 84,985.00 Lower Nazareth 45,710.00 Lower Mount Bethel 73,088.00 Moore 54,525.00 Plainfield 56,027.00 Saucon 165,172.00 Upper Mount Bethel 85,829.00 Upper Nazareth 25,380.00 Nazareth (Borough) 22,585.00 Williams 85,060.00 ___________ Total amount paid in the county, $1,193,674.00 ______________ ______________ The total amounts paid in the other counties, belonging in the Congressional District, are as follows: Carbon County (not including Mauch Chunk Borough) $241,292.00 Monroe, County, 332,837.00 Pike County, 16,550.00 Wayne County, 160,000.00 _____________ "Total amount paid in the other counties, 770,679.00 "Total paid in Northampton County, 1,193,674.00 _____________ "Total $1,964,353.00 ______________ ______________ "This amount does not include the necessary expenses connected with the enlistment of men furnished, paid to local bounty commissioners, &c., nor the various amounts secured by private contributions, or paid to substitutes by citizens. It merely, shows the amount of regular local bounty paid to volunteers and substitutes by the different townships, as allowed by law. Add to this amount the lowest estimate of expenses incurred in the enlistment of their volunteers, which will be no less than $10 to each man of the number paid, will increase the amount paid by the District to $2,022,353.00. "It will be seen that Northampton county paid a larger amount of bounties than the remaining four counties together. "These figures, however, do not include all the money paid in the District during the war. This is only an account of the expenses of the District after November, 1863, and strictly confined to the different townships, authorities, or corporations. If there should be added the various sums paid by individuals and the county bounties, together with the sums appropriated for the families of absent volunteers, and the amounts paid the three months and militia men, it would increase the amount considerably. Let us add one item, however, which may strictly be considered as belonging to the amounts of money paid out for the procuration of men to fill our quotas. We refer to commutation money, as this was considered an equivalent for personal service, and applies for the purpose of getting men. "The number of men who paid commutation, in this District, is 2,030, and the amount of money paid, $609,000. Add this to the amount paid for volunteers, and it will increase the sum to $2,631,353.00. "The number of men furnished by the District, by voluntary enlistments, since November, 1863, is 5,897. This does not include drafted personal service, nor men furnished prior to this date. "The number of men drafted, in our District, 8,064; and the number reported to date, 4,996, Of this number, 287 were held to personal service; 240 furnished substitutes after the draft, and 2,030 commuted. "In addition to the number of substitutes, 261 more were, furnished by enrolled men before draft, averaging, in price, from $500 to $1,500, none of which is included in this statement of money paid for men."
