Under the efficient Presidency of Rev. Dr. William C. Cattell it has made great advances in its facilities for liberal education, the following courses of study being now offered to students, viz: 1. CLASSICAL, embracing instruction in the departments of Mathematics, the Ancient and Modern Languages, English Philology, the Natural Sciences, Philosophy, Biblical Literature and History. 2. GENERAL SCIENTIFIC COURSE. 3. TECHNICAL COURSES in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Assaying, Architecture and Chemistry. Each of these courses embraces four years. In the Report of the National Bureau of Education, of the 372 Colleges in the United States, Lafayette ranks eighth in the attendance of collegiate students. The Freshman class in 1872 numbered 105. Conspicuous among the buildings for instruction crowning the summit of College Hill, is the Pardee Hall, 25§ feet in length, and having a floorage of 1 1/2 acres. At the head of Third Street, is South College, 218 feet front, containing the Chapel and numerous class-rooms. Near it are the Astronomical Observatory, the Jenks Chemical Hall, and the Metallurgical rooms. On the opposite border of the Campus is the row of brick halls - student's residences - designated, from liberal contributors to the funds of the institution, Blair, McKeen, Martin, Newkirk, and Powell Halls. There are also twelve Professor's houses. The Faculty number 26, among them men of eminence in their several departments of literature and the sciences. The Geological and Botanical collections contain 35,000 specimens; the Philosophical apparatus is extensive. In addition to liberal gifts made to Lafayette College, by A. Pardee, of Hazleton, and other donors named above, the citizens of Easton, in 1866, erected the EASTONIAN HALL, at a cost of $25,000, and contributed as follows: $1,000 Each - R. S.
