The pension was turned down because they found no record of his having enlisted. They had searched from 9/1/1841 to 6/3/1848. Had they looked in 1838 they would have found his enlistment in the Pennsylavania Volunteers (Register of Enlistments 42:105). He came from Easton, Northampton County, PA. The pension request by Cynthia Kime, age 54 described him as follows: "My late husbands description is as follows. Heighth 5 ft 6 in, Eyes: Blue. Hair: Dark Brown; Complexion: White. Was born January 19, 1819 at Easton Pa and was Christened in the German Lutheran Church in Easton Pa. At time of enlistment he was a blacksmith. I never knew of him having any other Christian name than 'Martin.' I think the name 'Kime" was spelled 'Keim' where he came from. Before enlistment he resided at Easton Pa. Ever since the close of the Mexican War until his death he resided here in Jeffersonville, Ind. His age was about 27 at time of his enlistment."
