Transcribed for the PAGenWeb Project by: Bruce T. Hall Foreword to the 1989 publication This book is not a dry and dull history. It is the story of a community --- the story of the men and women who helped to build the community. It deals with the lives of our ancestors, their trials, their fears and their tears. It deals with the faith of our fathers, their heartaches, their laughter, their songs and their play. Their lives were not always easy. But they triumphed over the odds. It is for us to realize that life was and continues to be a continuous flow of ideas, customs and legends. What our ancestors once lived for and died for, tells us something of their past and helps us to chart the future. It tells us something about our own time and how we can prepare for those coming after us. Great men of the past have acknowledged their debt to those who went before them. Men of today must understand that the present is but the living sum-total of the entire past. Come with us, then, as we walk through our community's past. Our forefathers made this community possible for us to enjoy today. Hallowed be their memory. Chester A. Moore Book Committee This book; published to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of Shamokin, Pennsylvania, in 1864; used an earlier book that described the history of the community, published in conjunction with that community's centennial celebration in 1964, as the point of departure for this book. Some additional material, describing the events of the intervening twenty-five years, has been incorporated into the main text of the narrative, while other information presented herein, was gleaned from "sponsor pages" contained in the rest of the document that addressed the history of specific community organizations and facilities. The text presented here is not a verbatim copy of the 1989 book. While every effort was made to maintain the integrity of the text of that narrative, there were too many instances where people, places, and events were described in the "present" tense which, due to events that transpired in the intervening decade, are no longer accurate.
