JORDAN HOWARD ROCKEFELLER is a successful real estate dealer and attorney-at-law of Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pa., of whose family a more complete history will be found elsewhere in this book in a biographical sketch of William M. Rockefeller. J. Howard Rockefeller is the only son of the late A. Jordan and Mary A. (Forsyth) Rockefeller, and was born in Sunbury, March 12, 1862. He was educated in the public schools of Northumberland and at Granville Military Academy, Granville, N. Y., from which he graduated in 1880. He was subsequently engaged in the general mercantile and coal business at Espy, Columbia County, Pa., for three years, and later was engaged in the same business for two years at Northumberland. Having accumulated sufficient money in five years' business to defray expenses, in 1885 he entered upon the study of law under the late J. N. Hill of Sunbury. Three years later, in 1888, he was admitted to the bar and -has since practiced his profession in Sunbury. He has also been admitted to the Supreme Court of the state and the United States District and Circuit Courts. He has a good general practice and is meeting with success as an attorney. Mr. Rockefeller possesses a natural bent of mind for real estate speculation, and from his earliest manhood he has been dealing in real estate. Having keen insight into land values he is regarded as a careful and shrewd investor, always making profitable investments. He owns a farm of 750 acres in Point township, 400 acres of which is under a fine state of cultivation, the balance being timberland. This is one of the finest farms in Central Pennsylvania. Mr. Rockefeller personally superintends this farm and is one of those who know how to make farming profitable. He also owns a large number of lots within the corporate limits of Sunbury. Our subject's father, A. Jordan Rockefeller, was born in Sunbury, and was educated in his native town, after which he studied law with the late Judge Alexander Jordan. He was admitted to the bar at the early age of twenty years and gained a good practice. He was also a leading politician, being a Democrat prior to the war, and afterward a Republican. He was a fluent speaker and made many campaign speeches. He was remarkably talented and was a bright young attorney when cut off by death just in the beginning of a brilliant career. He died at the age of twenty-five years and his widow still survives him, residing in Sunbury. He was joined in the holy bonds of matrimony with Mary A. Forsyth, a daughter of William T. Forsyth, now deceased, who was a prominent citizen of Northumberland. They had one son, Jordan Howard, subject of this sketch. Our subject sought for his wife, Edith Gertrude Hunsinger, daughter of William Hunsinger of Milton, Northumberland County, Pa., and two sons now bless their home: Jordan Howard, Jr., and William H. Mr. Rockefeller is a Democrat and takes a nominal interest in party successes. In his religious belief he is an advocate of the doctrine of the Presbyterian faith, like all his family.
