7/25/1900 Harrisburg, PA Prof. J. E. Bahner Hickory Corners, PA Northumberland County Dear friend, I have just returned from prayer meeting at the Harris St. Evangelical Church. I met with two disappointments. First, I had expected to meet and hear Rev. Schlegel (is that spelled correctly) but as he is out of the city I did not have that privilege. In the second place I was surprised at the attendance. Only eleven present. We had a very heavy rain during the afternoon, and so that was given as an excuse for the many absentees. Do you consider that an acceptable excuse for non-performance of duty? Notwithstanding those disappointments, I enjoyed the meeting very much. As God has promised, he was in our midst and that to bless. The leader, Mr. Weist, read the 19th psalm, and although I have read it and heard it read very, very often it never impressed me so forcibly as this evening. The latter part of the psalm made me think. The question that confrontted me is "Are the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart always acceptable in the sight of God"? God grant that, if they have not been, they may be from this night to the end of my life, be the time long or short. The leader made no comments, simply read it slowly and impressively. To me it proved a great blessing. I never received a more cordial welcome, on entering a strange church, than this evening. I met all present and had quite a long talk with several. They are very much interested in the camp meeting to be held at Hunter's Station. They are praying for its success. I was very much surprised to hear that you are going to the camp meeting at Hegins. No, I will not be there, neither will I be at Hunter's Station. This is no surprise, is it? Lizzie and I had given ourselves five weeks for our sewing but it will take longer time than we expected so that we will not go home before Aug. 23, and possibly not until a week later. And then if I would go to campmeeting I would not have any rest, and I dare not begin teaching without some rest. You asked what you said at the station about going to A. C. [Albright College] Women sometimes talk and then forget, but I never knew men did. If I remember correctly you expected to go to Myerstown on a Tuesday. When I asked whether you would stop off at Dauphin you said, "I do not know." You are going to college, are you not? Is Miss Zartman coming? She did not say. Trusting that you will have an enjoyable time at Hegins and that God's blessing may rest upon the entire meeting. I remain Very respectfully Mary R. Lyter 428 Hamilton St.
