Mrs. Charles Bostian; Sunbury, and Miss Hazel Miller at home and four sons, Robert and Joseph; in Utah Reuben United States Army and George Elysburg. June Miller told me That when the carnival came to Shamokin they set up in a field next to the Millers and used their water and then the kids in the Miller family all got free tickets to the Carnival and circus tent show. He raised Canary's in his basement. He would take a bucket off the wall and go to the Hose company for a bucket or Growler of Beer and his wife would go down to get him and he would be drunk but still have a full bucket of beer. Growler of Beer from Hose Company. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one's home by means of a small-galvanized pail. Rumor has it that when the beer sloshed around the pail, it created a rumbling sound as the CO2 escaped through the lid, thus the term "growler" was coined. A Brief History of Fairview Fire Company The Fairview Fire Company was organized April 29th 1901 by the following eleven men who met on the above entioned date for the purpose of founding a volunteer fire company. They were John Pratt, Frank McCracken, Victor Williard, John Heath, George W. Renn, John L. Williams, Joseph Dunn, Edward Beany, Harry Dunn, and Joseph Harlacker. The new company was chartered on October 29,1901. At the time there was very little fire protection in Coal Township. The only apparatus the original volunteer group had to protect lives and property was a hand-drawn gig with a small amount of hose. This piece of equipment is still kept on the company premises as a memento of early service. The company grew with the community and added modern equipment and methods. In 1926, the ambulance service was added in the form of one ambulance. From this modest beginning, with whole-hearted public support and untiring effort on the part of the volunteer firemen, there came into being the present Community Ambulance Service, with a modern spacious ambulance depot and three ambulances equipped with two-way radio communication and some of the latest life-saving equipment. Add to this the present courteous, efficient staff of ambulance drivers, and there exists an achievement in service of which the entire community can be proud. The present officers of the company, charged with the responsibility of maintaining this fine record of services are as follows: Gary Tharp, President; Richard Hooper, Vice-President; Kenneth Zmudzin, Recording Secretary; George Tyson, Treasurer; James Heims, Joseph Broscious, Ronald Garancheski, Trustees; Ales Lubereski, Al DiOrio, John Pratt, Ambulance Directors; Larry Snyder, Ambulance Secretary. Sunbury Daily Item May 9, 1960 Sunbury Boy 4 Meets Death in Street Mishap. Richard J. Bostian Jr., four son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Bostian 1130 East Chestnut Street, died Saturday afternoon of a fractured skull sustained when he was struck by a station wagon on East Market Street. The child was dead on arrival at Community Hospital at 12:45 o'clock. Dr. Henry F. Ulrich, Sunbury, coroner of Northumberland county said the boy suffered an intracraniel hemorrhage and other injuries. The coroner said there will be no inquest and that he was satisfied that death was the result of an unavoidable accident. City police said that no charges have been lodged against, the driver of the vehicle Robert H. Wolfington of New Buffalo. Sgt. Marion Sprinkle, who investigated the accident, said that Wolfington was traveling east on Market street when the Bostian child suddenly dashed in front of his vehicle. Wolfington said he saw the child but not in time to avoid striking him. The accident occurred approximately 78 feet from the intersection of N. Twelfth and Market Streets. Sgt. Sprinkle said that tired marks on the street, indicated that Wolfington skidded for a distance of 45 feet before his vehicle struck the child. The front bumper of the vehicle struck the boys left leg and the impact threw the child in the air. The station wagon continued forward for about 40 feet and the victim rolled some distance to the intersection. Sgt. Sprinkle said the Bostian child attempted to cross from the south to the north side of the street where a playmate had gone. H. H. Heintzelman. of Hamilton told police he was operating a truck a short distance in front of Wolfington and that when he heard the station wagon skid he looked back and saw the child being struck. Mrs. James Shriver, 1114 East Market Street, opposite whose home the point impact occurred, said she heard the sound of skidding tires and ran out on her porch. The women said she did not see the accident but saw the child lying in the street. An Americas Ambulance took the victim to the hospital where the coroner released the body to the Dornsife funeral home. Sgt. Sprinkle said that young Bostian was playing with an Aurand boy who had crossed Market Street and was preparing to return to the south side when the victim ran out from along side a hedge into the street. The child's distraught mother was placed under the care of a physician as a result of the tragedy.
