(1) AFFIDAVIT of ABRAHAM GANGWER: State of Pennsylvania County of Lehigh } SS On this Seventh day of January A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty three, Before me one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas within and for the said county, personally came Abraham Gangwer aged Seventy five years and Jacob Newhard, aged Sixty two years, residents of the said county, who after being sworn in ...[phrase illegible]...the said Abraham Gangwer that he commanded, and the said Jacob Newhard that he was a lieutenant of a company of Militia, in the Regiment of Pennsylvania Militia commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Christian J. Heter in the war with Great Britain, declared by the United States on the 18th June 1812, that they were drafted and marched from the County of Lehigh aforesaid on or about the Seventeenth day of September 1814 to Marcus Hook, below Philadelphia, where they remained in the service of the United States as aforesaid, for the term of three months when they were discharged on the twentieth day of December A.D. 1814. That one DANIEL HEILMAN was a private in the said company and served therein during the term aforesaid, to wit from the Seventeenth day of September 1814 to the twentieth day of December 1814, and was Honorably discharged, that the no written discharge issued to the said Daniel Heilman, or any others of the said Company. Abraham Gangwer Jacob Newhard Sworn and subscribed before me on this day and year aforesaid, And I certify that the said Abraham Gangwer and Jacob Newhard are well known to me, that they are credible persons and that their statement is entitled to credit. Jacob Dillinger (2) FIRST AFFIDAVIT of DANIEL HEILMAN: State of Pennsylvania County of Northumberland } SS On this Seventh day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace, in and for the County and State aforesaid, DANIEL HEILMAN, aged 60 years, a resident of Lower Augusta township Northumberland County Pa. who being duly sworn, according to law, declares, that he is the identical DANIEL HEILMAN who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Abraham Gangwer in the Regiment of Penna. Militia commanded by Lieut. Col. Christian I. Heter in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June A.D. 1812 that he was drafted at Allentown Lehigh Co. Pa. on or about the Seventeenth day of September A.D. 1814 for the term of _______ and continued in actual service in said War for the term of fourteen days or more, and was honorably discharged at Philadelphia on or about the 20th day of December A.D. 1814. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which he may be entitled, under the Act approved March 3d, 1855. He also declares that he has not received a Warrant for Bounty land, under this or any other Act of Congress, nor made any other application therefore. Daniel Heilman (3) File No. 11349 WAR of 1812 Act February 14, 1871 BRIEF of CLAIM FOR A SURVIVOR'S PENSION in the case of DANIEL HEILMAN, a ________ of Captain Abraham Gangwer's company, Penna. Militia Reg't, Residence: Northumberland County, Pa. Post Office Address: Lower Augusta, Northumberland Co., Penna. Enlisted Sept. 17, 1814, Discharged Dec. 20, 1814. Declaration and identification in due form, filed April 21", 1871. SERVICE FOR SIXTY DAYS SHOWN AS FOLLOWS: Third Auditor reports that Daniel Heilman served in Captain Abraham Gangwer's Co. Penna. Militia, from Sept. 17" 1814 to Dec. 20" 1814. Length of service 95 days. Claimant declares that he is not a pensioner under any previous act. Name not on list of Pensioners. Loyalty: averment of claimant and testimony of Abraham Shipman and Andrew Hauck. Oath to support the Constitution of U.S. subscribed. Admitted October 20", 1871, to a Pension of eight dollars per month, from February 14, 1871. (4) SECOND AFFIDAVIT of DANIEL HEILMAN: State of Pennsylvania County of Northumberland } SS On this the 22nd day of March A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, personally appeared before me Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Northumberland County a court of record within and for said County and State DANIEL HEILMAN aged 75 years, a resident of Lower Augusta twp County of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is married that his first wife's name Charity Deal since deceased and that he now has his second wife Margaret formerly Margaret Smeltzer to whom he was married in 1851, that he served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the War of 1812, that he is the identical Daniel Heilman, who was drafted in Captain Abraham Gangwer's company (Rifle company) Col. Heter under General Spearing, at Allentown Pennsylvania on the ______ day of September the first part of the month 1814 and was honorably discharged on or about the 20th of December A.D. 1814, during his service they were once called from Marcus Hook to Camden when the English landed, and then returned again to Marcus Hook when they were discharged as above stated, that he at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States adhered to the cause of the enemies of the government giving them aid or comfort; or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority or pretended authority in hostility to the United States; and that he will support the Constitution of the United States that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the act approved February 14, 1871 and he hereby constitutes and appoints Truman N. Purdy of Sunbury Pa. his true and lawful attorney with full power of substitution and [illegible word] to prosecute his claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued that his post office is Lower Augusta county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania and that his domicile or place of residence is Lower Augusta. witness Daniel Heilman T.H. Purdy (5) AFFIDAVITS of ABRAHAM SHIPMAN & ANDREW HAUCK: Also personally appeared Abraham Shipman Associate Judge of our said Court of Lower Augusta, and Andrew Hauck of the same place, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me duly sworn say they were present and saw Daniel Heilman the claimant sign his name to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with him that he is the identical person he represents himself to be; that at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States did he adhere to the cause of the enemies of the government giving them aid and comfort and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Claim filed after June 20th '78, Soldier pensioned under Act Febr'y 14" 1871 Cert. No. 6923 Paid at Philadelphia. Died as proved April 29" 1875. Alleged service { In the Co. of Capt. Gangwer Pa. Militia, War of 1812, from 23d Sept to 31st Oct 1814.Record evidence of service { 3d And. reports that Daniel Hileman served in Capt. Gangwer's Co. from Sept. 17 to Dec. 20, 1814. Length of service { 95 days.Proof of identity { Aff. of Abrm. Sterner and Samuel C. Renn who fully identify claimant. Admitted Feb. 13, 1879, to a pension of EIGHT DOLLARS per month from March 9, 1878 the date of Act of Congress. Geo. H. Gorham Pension Searcher (7) AFFIDAVITS of ABRAHAM STERNER & SAMUEL ARNOLD: State of Pennsylvania County of Northumberland } SS On this eighth day of February A.D. 1879 personally appeared before me Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas the same being a court of record within and for the county and state aforesaid Abram Sterner aged 48 years residing in Lower Augusta Township County and State aforesaid and Samuel Arnold aged 30 years residing in Lower Augusta Township County and State aforesaid, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit who being duly sworn according to law, say that they knew and were well acquainted with DANIEL HEILMAN who was the husband of Margaret Heilman who is now making widow's claim for service pension under Act of March 9, 1878 No. 32056, That said Daniel Heilman died in the Township of Lower Augusta County and State aforesaid on the Twenty- Ninth day of April AD 1875 and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Abram Sterner Samuel Arnold Sworn and Subscribed before me this Eighth day of February A.D. 1879; and I hereby certify that the contents of the above affidavit were fully made known and explained to the above parties who were sworn before swearing including the words eraser and the words "under act of March 9 1878" added and that I have no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim. Wesley Auten Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas (8) SUMMARY OF PROOF Marriage { Date: March 14, 1852, of Daniel Heilman to Margaret Smeltzer, as alleged by claimant who is corroborated by Elizabeth Bartholomew, an eyewitness, and by Anna Culp a daughter of claimant and soldier. Proof as to capacity to marry { Soldier alleged mge. to Margaret Smeltzer in 1851. Claimant alleges that legal barrier had been removed by death of soldier's former wife. Death of soldier { Date: April 29 1875, as alleged by claimant, who is corroborated by aff. of Abm. Sterner and Samuel Arnold. Widowhood { Claimant alleges that she has not remarried since death of soldier. (9) DECLARATION of MARGARET HEILMAN: WAR of 1812 Claim of Widow for Service Pension State of Pennsylvania County of Northumberland } SS On this 21st day of September AD 1878 personally appeared before me Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas the Same being a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid Margaret Heilman aged 63 years a resident of Lower Augusta Township in the State of Pennsylvania County aforesaid who being duly sworn according to law declares that she is the widow of Daniel Heilman who served under the name of Daniel Heilman as a private in the Company commanded by Captain Abraham Gangwer First Company of Riflemen attached to the 1st Brigade 2nd Division Penna. Militia under Brigadier General H. Spring, Major General Shirtz commandant in the War of 1812[,] that her said husband enlisted at Low Hill Township Schuylkill County Pennsylvania on or about the twenty-third day of September AD 1814 for the term of _______and continued in actual service in said war for the term of thirty-seven days and whose services terminated by reason of an honorable discharge at ________ on the thirty-first day of October AD 1814. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz; 18 years of age occupation carpenter-- Born in Lehigh County Pennsylvania Height 5ft in Blue eyes Light hair Fair complexion. She further states that she was married to said Daniel Heilman in the township of Lower Augusta in the County of Northumberland and in the State of Pennsylvania on the fourteenth day of March AD 1852 by one Christopher Neuman who was a minister of the Gospel and that her name before her said marriage was Margaret Smeltzer and she further states that Daniel Heilman was previously married to Gertrude Deihl who died on the 22nd of December AD 1846 in Lower Augusta Township Northumberland County Penna and that her said husband Daniel Heilman died at Lower Augusta township in the State of Pennsylvania on the 29th day of April AD 1875 and that she has not again married, and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her Said husband since the date of his discharge from the army, viz: her husband in Schuylkill and Lehigh counties and her said husband and herself in Lower Augusta Township Northumberland County Pennsylvania. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740 (inclusive) Revised Statutes and the act of March 9th 1878 and hereby appoints Lewis Dewart of Sunbury Penna. her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her claim; and she further declares that she has heretofore made no application for pension bounty or land that her residence in Lower Augusta Township County of Northumberland State of Pennsylvania and that her post office address is Mile Run PO Lower Augusta Twp North'd Co Penna. Attest--area to mark her George D. Bucher Margaret X Heilman Samuel C. Renn mark Also personally appeared Abram Sterner aged 43 years residing in Lower Augusta Twp North. Co and Samuel C. Renn aged 34 years residing in same place--persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit who being by me duly sworn say that they have known the said Margaret Heilman for 15 years and for 15 years respectively that they were present and saw her make her mark to the foregoing declaration and that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her that she is the identical person she represents herself to be and they further say that they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical Daniel Heilman who rendered the Service alleged in the above application in the Company of Abram Gangwer in the 1st Brigade 2nd Division in the war of 1812 by the following manner facts and circumstances, viz; by living in the same township county and state as near neighbors to said Margaret Heilman for the above periods of time that they have know her and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Renn Sworn and subscribed before me this 21st day of September AD 1878 and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing ... and that I have no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim Lloyd T. Rohrbach Prothonotary (10) AFFIDAVIT of ELIZABETH BARTHOLOMEW: State of Pennsylvania County of Northumberland } SS On this third day of September AD 1878 personally appeared before me John M. Pursel a justice of the peace in and for the County and State aforesaid Elizabeth Bartholomew aged 42 years residing at Lower Augusta Township Northumberland County State of Pennsylvania who being duly sworn according to law declares that she was present when Margaret Heilman was married to Daniel Heilman on the 14th day of March AD 1852 by the Rev. Christopher Neiman, that she was the only witness present at said time she further states that said Margaret Heilman is the identical person who is now applying for a widow's pension of the War of 1812 as the widow of Said Daniel Heilman, she further states that she is able to fix the date of said marriage by being Sunday morning the 14' day of March AD 1852 and that she has no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim of said Margaret Heilman. Attest-- Elizabeth Bartholomew Abrm Sterner Sworn and Subscribed before me this third day of September AD 1878 and I hereby certify that the contents of the above affidavit were fully made known and explained to the witness and maker of this affidavit before swearing, including the words "witness and maker" added over the words "applicant" erased, and I further certify that the witness and maker is the identical person she represents herself to be and is respectable and entitled to credit and that I have no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim of Said Margaret Heilman. Pursel Justice of the Peace (11) AFFIDAVIT of ANNA CULP: State of Pennsylvania County of Northumberland } SS On this 21st day of September AD 1878 personally appeared before me Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas the Same being a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid ANNA CULP aged 25 years a resident of Lower Augusta Township in County and State aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law declares that she was born on January 8th 1853 and that she is the daughter of Daniel and Margaret Heilman, that her father said Daniel Heilman is the identical Daniel Heilman who served in the Company of Abram Gangwer in the 1st Brigade 2nd Division in the war of 1812 and that her mother said Margaret Heilman is the Margaret Heilman who is applying tot he government of the United States for a pension as the widow of said Daniel Heilman. She further declares her mother said Margaret Heilman has never remarried since the death of her father said Daniel Heilman. Attest-- Anna Culp Geo. D. Bucher S.
