CIVIL WAR PENSION APPLICATION FOR JOHN EDWARD LEES AND ELLEN LEES State of Pennsylvania County of NORTHUMBERLAND On this 4th day of August A. D. 1906 personally came before me a Justice of the Peace, within and for the county and State aforesaid, Ellen Lees, aged 59 Years, a resident of Shamokin, County of Northumberland, state of Pennsylvania, who being duly sworn sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain pension under the acts of Congress granting pension to the widows of soldiers and sailors who have died by reason of wound or injury received, or disease contracted, in the services of the United States and in the line of duty: That she is the widow of John Lees, sho was enrolled under the name of John Lees, Enrolled or commissioned at Ashland or Pottsville, PA on the Sixth day of March AD, 1865 as a private in Capt. Francis D. Kochs Co. I 48th Reg. of PA. veteran volunteer and was discharged on the 17th day of July AD 1865 and who died at Shamokin PA on the 8th day of August AD 1902 of inflammatory Rheumatism and a disease of the eye due to his military service in the U.S. Army incurred in the above-named service.That the said soldier was not in the military or naval service of the United States except as stated above. That the said soldier was born March 29 AD, 1846 at England; that his personal description at the time of enlistment was as follows: Height 5 ft 51/2 in.; complexion medium; color of eyes dark; color of hair dark; permanent marks or scars none; that his occupation was laborer. That she was married under the name of Ellen Nuss at Ashland, Schuylkill Co, PA on the fourth day of July AD 1866 by a Justice of the Peace named Gensil; that there was no legal barrier to the marriage; that she had not been previously married; that the soldier had not been previously married. That she was never divorced from the said soldier and that she has not remarried since his death. That the said soldier left the following-named children under 16 years of age at the date of his death, to wit: George Lees born August 8, 1888 at Locust Dale, PA. That she has heretofore applied for pension persistant by certificate no 547951 Act June 27, 1890. She hereby appoints J.M. Alderman of Elmira NY as her lawful attorney, with power of substitution, and authorizes him to present and prosecute this claim. That her post office address is 904 Mt. Carmel St., Shamokin in the county of Northumberrland, State of Pennsylvania Ellen Lees Attest: Patrick F. Brennan Edward Brennan She was granted pension at $8/ month and an additional sum of $2 per month for her son George H. Lees commencing August 14, 1902, issued Feb. 21, 1903. Also in the file were many applications for pension that were filed by John Lees when alive due to disability caused by Thyphoid fever and resulting rheumatism contracted around the month of July 1865 at or near Alexandra, Virginia and treated at the field hospital there by Doctor Blackwood. There are statements by his wife how she has to wrap him in “Red Flannel” and my doctors who treated him, and co-workers from the mines who testified to the difficulty he had working and the times he was unable to work. All claims were denied. GENERAL AFFIDAVIT State of Pennsylvania, County of Schuylkill, SS; In the matter of orig No 1037684 of John Lee, Co. I, 48th Reg of PA Infantry. On this day of April ad 1892 personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths in the County of Schuylkill and Stat eof Penn whose post office address is the same well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: I am the claimant in the above stated claim. My correct name is John Lee. I enlisted in the above named service under the name of John Lee. If my name appears in any part of the evidence filed by me as “Lees,” it has been made through a clerical error as I never carried any name but my own, as given above. I further declare that I have interest in said case an am concerned in its prosecution. John Lee.
