Adams John Shipman 226 Bell Court East S. 3906 Lexington, KY BA-J/MLB Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the record of John Shipman, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, who was born in 1760 in New Jersey, received pension on account of his service, lived in Hamilton County, OH, where he died in 1834. The record of John Shipman follows as found in the papers on file in claim for pension, S. 3906, based upon his service in the Revolutionary War. John Shipman was born in 1760 in Greenwich Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. The names of his parents are not known. While residing in Greenwich, Township, New Jersey, John Shipman enlisted in 1778 and served nine months as a private in Captain Paul Shipman's company (relationship not stated). Colonel William Bond's New Jersey regiment, and was on an expedition to Wyoming in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania against the Indians. He then returned to New Jersey afterwards and enlisted and served a tour of two month in Captain Winter's New Jersey Company at South Amboy; another tour of two months in the same company at Perth Amboy, and a third tour of three months in Captain Winter's company under Colonel Thomas Hartley at Elizabethtown. He served a fourth tour of three months at Minisink under Major Westbrook in the New Jersey troops; dates of these enlistments not given. The solider was in the New Jersey militia as a substitute for his brother, William Shipman. After the Revolutionary War, the soldier resided in Buffalo, Union county, Pennsylvania and in Augusta Township, Northumberland County, that state. He was allowed pension while a resident of Augusta Township, on his application executed August 21, 1832. In October 1833, he was a resident of Hamilton County, Ohio, where had had moved to be with his children, whose names he did not designate, nor was the name of his wife given. He died September 23, 1834. In 1832, Christian Shipman, brother of the soldier, John was living in Northumberland County, PA, but stated that during the Revolution he was a resident of Greenwich Township, New Jersey. In the same year, on William Shipman was living in Augusta or Shamokin Township, both in Northumberland County, PA. It is not stated whether he was soldier's broth of that name. John Shipman's brother-in-law, Abraham Dewitt, in 1832 was living in Greenwich Township, Sussex County, NJ, the name of Abraham's wife not shown. In 1833, one Harmon Shipman made affidavit in Hamilton County, Ohio, in behalf of the soldier, John Shipman, but did not designate his relationship. In order to obtain date of last payment of pension and name and address of the person paid in the case of John Shipman, you should write to the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, this city and cite the following data: John Shipman Certificate #3836 (or 56) Issued January 4, 1833 (or 35) Rate $65.22 per annum Commenced March 4, 1831?
