Enlisted April 1779 in Muncy, Northumberland Co PA as a private #20186 in Company commanded by Capt David Berry under Col Henry Antes Regt. Was in duty at Wallis Fort in Muncy when they were surprised by a body of Cayuga, Delaware and Seneca Indians at Loyalsock Creek where it empties into the Susquehanna River, was taken prisoner when five of his party were killed; Cornelius along with his father were taken up Lycoming to Chemung, then to Newtown, stayed there until after planting and Cornelius labored with the Indians at his time; then taken to Seneca Lake where they heard of Gen Sullivan's army being in the county, he was taken thru several Indian villages to Fort Niagara then a British Garrison under the command of Col Bolton - saw Col Butler and Col Johnston then. He remained there during the winter and spring and was sent to cut wood and was part of the time employed in the kitchen of the garrison. Abt 1 June 1780 was sent down the lake in a vessel with troops and at a place called Carlion Island near Lake Ontario he was embanked on a boat and was sent to Montreal and then put in jail with the other prisoners and remained there until summer 1781 and then with abt 250 prisoners was sent to St Johns, then sent in boats and landed at Ticonderoga, then on to Vermont, went thru Saratoga to Albany. Then to ? sp? Silver Court House where his uncle lived. Then to Readington in Hunterdon Co and after some time he returned to his home in Muncy. Thus he had been a prisoner over two years. He states that he was born 11 October 1763 at Readington and the family moved to Muncy when he was abt 10-11 years of age. After the peace he lived in Muncy until abt 40 yrs ago when he removed to Hopewell where he has lived since. He named those who could testify for him: Rev Ebenezer Benham, Daniel Clark, John Rigner (sp?) and Robert Hughes of Hopewell. The only other person who knows of his service is his brother William.
