Richard WOLVERTON Jacob MOUERY Philip STAMBACH Valentine FAGELY J. S. McWILLIAMS C. H. REED Stephen BITTENBENDER David FAGELY W. B. SWENK Chancy EATON John DUNKELBERGER William FAGELY Shamokin, March 5, 1853 Meeting in Shamokin Pursuant to a call a large number of the citizens of Shamokin township, met at Elysburg, to take into consideration the proceedings of the Commissioners of Northumberland county, in regard to their subscribing $200,000 to the Susquehanna Railroad. Whereupon Christian BAUSCHLAG was called to the Chair, assisted by the following persons as Vice Presidents, namely: - H. H. KNOBLE, Daniel SWANK, Wm. CRICKBAUM, Samuel REEDER, N. CAMPBELL, Samuel ENT, James LYNN, Samuel HAAS, sen., and Wm. HAAS, sen. with S. K. GILGER, and P. JOHNSON, Secretaries. O. H. CAMPBELL, Geo. KELLER, F. P. SWARTZ and Wm. SWANK were appointed a committee to draft resolutions, who reported the following, which were unanimously adopted. Whereas we have been informed that two of the Commissioners of Northumberland county, namely, WEAVER and WILSON, have subscribed $200,000 to the stock of the Susquehanna Railroad Company, and immediately after the October Election signed and issued bonds to that amount, which are now in the hands of the Treasurer of said Company, and that no entry of this oppressive and cruel act appears on any of the books of the county Commissioners. And whereas it was well known to the Commissioners long before the October election, that the citizens of the county were almost unanimously opposed to the making of said subscription, having so declared in public meetings, and having nominated and elected without opposition, a Commissioner in October in place of WILSON, whose term was then about to expire, on the ground of his having given pledges to oppose the said subscription. And whereas WILSON and WEAVER frequently assured individual citizens of the county that they had not, and would not make the said subscription or issue the bonds, and one of them by his published card before the October election, most solemnly declared he had not subscribed to the stock of the Company, and if he should thereafter do so the people of the county might give him the reward of a traitor. Therefore resolved: 1st - That WILSON and WEAVER have betrayed their confiding constituents, willfully and knowingly, and hereafter should receive the reward that they deserve. 2nd - That Commissioner ALBERT deserves the gratitude of the people of this county, for his honesty and firmness in resisting the importunities of men (whose names must be known to induce him to make the subscription and sign the bonds.) 3rd - That as a majority of the present board of Commissioners are opposed to this wicked measure we request them to give notice immediately to the President of the Susquehanna Railroad Company that neither interest nor principal will ever be paid, and request him to return them. 4th - That we hereby pledge ourselves to oppose in future the election of any man who advocates or supports the said subscription, or those who made or procured it to be made to any office within our reach. 5th - That we request the citizens of Northumberland county to meet in mass meeting without distinction of party, at the Court House, in Sunbury, on Saturday the 5th day of March next, for the purpose of taking into consideration the subject of these resolutions, and to take such action to repudiate the payment of the bonds as may be deemed proper. 6th - That all the Editors of the county are hereby requested to publish the proceedings of this meeting. 7th - That the above preamble and resolutions be signed by the officers. [Signed by the Officers] Flour and Feed Store The subscriber respectfully informs his friends and the public generally, that he has opened a flour and feed store in Fawn street, in the building formerly occupied by Squire BOWER, as his office, where he will constantly keep on hand all kinds of flour, feed and grain, at the lowest market prices for each. Emanuel WILVERT Sunbury, March 1, 1853 A Card We the undersigned Auditors duly elected by the County, deem it proper to state to the taxpayers the cause of the delay of their report for the year 1852. A special board of Auditors were appointed at the last August Court to adjust errors that were alleged to have crept into the public accounts for years previous. They have concluded their labors, and we have reason to believe that errors of considerable amount have been discovered; which will materially alter the former balances, which we would have to be governed by. Their report will be submitted at the April term for confirmation and we will then be able to publish a report that can, we think, be relied upon as we only want correct balances to complete our statement.
