Andrew Baldy, janitor of the Shamokin market, was drowned Tuesday morning between the hour of 11 o'clock and noon. When found he was lying face down in Shamokin creek on the west side of Eighth street bridge, near the north street approach. Although the body was still warm when found, all efforts to restore him were fruit- less. A short time before the unfortunate oc- curence, Mr. Baldy while engaged in cleaning up the gutters of the debris left by the market wagons stumbled and fell in front of the opera house. It is supposed he then went to the creek for the purpose of washing himself, and the bank being quite steep, fell forward and was unable to ex- tricate himself. There was not depth of water enough to cover the back of his head, but when the body was found the face was buried in the mud. There is a bruise on the forehead, indicating that he struck his head against some hard substance in the bot- tom of the creek, which may have rendered him unconscious. The man complained of being unwell in the morning while on duty, saying his head felt heavy and queer. Andrew Baldy was born in Geneva, N.Y., February 3, 1829, and was consequently in the fifty-ninth year of his age. He had been a resident of Shamokin for nearly a quarter of a century, having previously lived for many years in this city while he was an engineer on the Northern Central railroad. He leaves a wife and four chil- dren, the youngest a boy of 12. The de- ceased was a brother of Thomas Baldy, foreman of car inspectors in P. & E. yard, and also of Mrs. William Hoover, Mrs. John Fisher and Mrs. William Goodrich, of this place, and Mrs. John Bourne, of Topeka, Kansas. The funeral took place in this city from the Reading railroad station, on the arrival of the 11 17 train Thursday morning.
