Williams, 27, of Catawissa, Pa who was killed in the Battle of St. Lo in France, on August 6, 1944 will arrive at Mt Carmel Junction at 10:28 Wednesday morning. He was born in Kulpmont, Pa on Jun 8, 1917. Prior to his induction on January 15, 1941, he was employed at the Bloomsburg, Silk Mill. He joined the 28th Division at Indiantown Gap, Pa and was sent overseas in September 1943. He was serving with Company I, 109th Infantry of the Army's 28th Division at the time of his death. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Catawissa. Surviving are his widow, the former Leona BREDBENNER, of Catawissa, Pa; one son John Wayne at home, his parents; Mr. and Mrs Harry WILLIAMS of Catawissa, Pa; four sisters; Mrs Kimber (WILLIAMS) DEETER, Rupert, Pa, Mrs Ruth (WILLIAMS) EDWARDS and Miss Doris WILLIAMS of Catawissa, Pa; and Mrs George (WILLIAMS) DIRK of Missouri. Three men were instantly killed yesterday afternoon in an explosion which destroyed the dynamite mixing house of the Atlas Powder Company at Reynoldsville, near Tamaqua. origin of the deal dealing explosion was not immediately determined by officials of the company. The three men who died in the explosion were: John WHETSTONE, Tamaqua; Russel H, KURTZ, South Tamaqua, and Clarence WALBURN, Reynoldsville. A company spokesman said the men were together in the mixing house at the time of the blast. Adjoining buildings were slightly damaged. The accident was the first at the Atlas Company plant since early in 1931, when three men were killed in an explosion in one of the dynamite mixing rooms. John MISIEWICZ, age 61, of 1558 Wabash Street, retired miner, died early today in the Geisinger Hospital at Danville, from pneumonia which developed after an illness of two weeks. Mr. MISIEWICZ who was born in Poland, Jan 21, 1883, came to the United States in 1902 and secured work at Luke Fidler Colliery. He later worked at various regional collieries, but retired from mining activities two years ago. He was last employed at the Reliance mine. For a short period after retirement he worked at the American Car and Foundry plant. Berwick. SUMMERS and Sarah VENN was born in Shamokin and resided here until 14 years ago, when the family moved to Phoenix Park, where he was employed as a colliery engineer to the time of his illness. Surviving SUMMERS are his widow and the following children: Mrs William KIEHL and James SUMMERS of Ashland; Mrs Michael LEVERIO, Mrs Ida CHODNOFF, Miss ELIZABETH and William SUMMERS, at home. DUNKELBERGER, 72 died in Suburb of Philadelphia. Former resident of Shamokin, died early yesterday after an illness with which he was stricken a number of weeks ago. DUNKELBERGER, son of the late Joseph a. and Mary Ann DUNKELBERGER was born near Weigh Scales. His father was a pioneer painter and decorator and his mother a member of the first families to settle at Weigh Scales. The former resident spent his early life here, removing with his parents to Philadelphia when his father became a decorator for one of the leading Philadelphia are firms. Mrs. DUNKELBERGER died in 1933 at the age of 81 and the father in 1939 at age 90. Both are buried in Blue Church Cemetery, and from early boyhood it was the custom of "Jim" DUNKELBERGER to come here each Memorial Day to place flowers on the graves of his forebearers, later on the burial places of his parents. The only survivors of the former resident are cousins, several of whom reside in this locality. The body will arrive on the Reading Company express and will be taken directly to Blue Church Cemetery for burial rites. Major funeral services will be held Tuesday evening in Philadelphia. Andrew (SHEGANOSKI) SZYGODZINSKI, 63 of 758 Pine Street Kulpmont, died this morning at 12:30 in his home from complications after an illness of almost 10 years. SZYGODZINSKI a former Richard Colliery Employee, was born in Poland, September 11, 1882. He came to the United States in 1901. He first settled in Shenandoah, but 22 years ago moved to Kulpmont. SZYGODZINSKI was a member of St Casmir Church Kulpmont. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Antoinett ZEMAITER; for sons, Joseph, Edward, and John at home, and Henry, Bayonne, New Jersey, and three daughters, Mrs Stanley PORIDA, Mrs Frank PAWOLWSKI and Mrs Leo TESTI, all of Bayonne, New Jersey. Eight grandchildren survive also. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, beginning at 9:00 in St. Casmir Church. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery at Marion Heights. Born in Helfenstein, Feb 20, 1910, he was a son of the late Solomon HUMMEL and Mary Jane REINOEHL. His wife Beatrice, preceded him in death. A former miner, Mr. HUMMEL was last employed at Triangle Cable Co, New Jersey, until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of Centrailia Methodist Church. SMINK, 87 of 1600 Lafayette Parkway, Williamsport a native of Shamokin, died suddenly yesterday at the Williams Nursing Home, Williamsport. She sustained a hip fracture last January 9. Mrs SMINK, widow of Robert W. SMINK, was born in Shamokin Jun 22, 1876, a daughter of the late William H.R. SMINK and Annie L. GULTERMAN. Her father was a chief burgess of Shamokin. A son Robert D. COUTTS, 83, who resided with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert HAGERTY, 706 East Commerce St, died at 9:00 last night in Northumberland County Institutional Hospital, Treverton Road where he had been a medical patient two years. Death followed an extended illness. A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. COUTTS, was born in Boydtown, Jul 22, 1879, son of the late SAMUEL COUTTS and Josephine DIETMAN. Until his retirement eight years ago, he was employed as a maintenance man at Tharp's Ice Cream Company for 30 years. Mr. COUTTS, who was educated in local public schools, was married to the former Miss Maim SCHMIDT, who preceded him in death in 1945. OLSHEFSKI, 57, of 32 North Grape Street, Mount Carmel, step-father of two Shamokin residents, died last evening at 6:51 in Lower Bucks County Hospital, Bristol, from injuries he received six weeks ago. Mr. OLSHEFSKI was seriously injured when he fell 32 feet from a catwalk while working for a gravel sand company near Levittown. He had been in critical condition since the accident. Death due to a complication, terminated an illness of one year. Mr. SLAVINSKY was a patient in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, several times during the past year, and was confined to a Bronx, New York hospital. Born in Atlas December 2, 1922, Mr. SLAVINSKY was a son of the late Profiry SLAVINSKY and Clara BOBACK. He resided in Shamokin during the past two years and prior to that time lived in Kulpmont. He was married Sept 12,1959 in the Shamokin Church to the former Anna SHICORA. He was a plumber by trade. Charles Inez COUTTS, 77 of 544 North Diamond Street, died last night at 6:45 in Shamokin Hospital. Born in Shamokin, Jul 8, 1883, Mr. COUTTS was a son of the late Samuel COUTTS and Josephine DIETMAN. He was employed as a miner at the former Centrailia Colliery and later at the Glen Burn. He was married to Mary HUMMEL. Mr. Coutts attended Coal Township Schools. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. John IDZIK and Mrs. Michael AUGUSTINE, Shamokin and Mrs. James FUEDALE and Mary Ellen, Mount Carmel; five grandchildren, and two brothers, William, Shamokin, and John, Jersey Shore. Burial will be in the Shamokin Cemetery. Leon Kerstetter Shamokin News Dispatch January 25, 1937...Injuries Prove Fatal for Leon Kerstetter. Injuries which police believe were caused by a hit-run motorist were fatal to Leon Kerstetter, 21 of 1642 West Wood Street, who was found unconscious early Saturday morning in front of the Herr Gas Station, on the highway between Weigh Scales and Paxinos, where he was employed. The youth died at 1:00 this morning in the Shamokin Hospital with out regaining consciousness. Attaches at the institution said death was caused by a fracture of the skull and internal injuries. Kerstetter was found along the highway in front of the gas station at 6:45 Saturday morning by a farmer en route to Shamokin. Realizing that the youth was seriously injured the farmer hailed an automobile driven by Fred Kublic, North 6th Street, Shamokin. Kublic remained with the injured youth while the farmer drove to the highway patrol sub-station in Tharptown to report the accident. In the meantime, George Kerstetter's brother of the victim, who is also employed at the gas station, arrived to report for work and with Kublic took his brother to the hospital. Kerstetter was unconscious when admitted to the institution and an examination by surgeons revealed a fractured skull, concussion of the brain and internal injuries. The youth failed to respond to treatment administered and died without regaining consciousness. Leon Kerstetter was born in Coal Township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey C. Kerstetter. he was reared there and was educated in the Coal Township schools, graduating from high school in 1933, and was employed as an attendant at the Herr Gasoline Station during recent months. He married Nellie Zelinski October 5, 1935. Besides his wife the deceased leaves a son, Ronald, his father and the following brothers and sisters; Charles, Alfred, Harvey, Howard and Donald of Shamokin; Harry of near Paxinos; Earl of Mayfair, Mrs Ethel Thew of Treverton road; MRS Arthur Troutman and Miss Audrey Kerstetter of Shamokin, Mrs William Downey of Mount Carmel. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the home of Rev. H.W. Butt, pastor of the St. John's Evangelical church, will officiate and burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Funeral Services for George Kahney, Sr., former local barber, was held from the family residence, 604 East Commerce Street, at 2:00 this afternoon and were attended by numerous relatives and friends. The Rev. H.J. Behney, of the First United Brethern Church has charge of the memorial rites, with burial in the Shamokin Cemetery. Albert Warren Malick Shamokin News-Dispatch, Thursday April 16, 1936. Lifelong resident of Shamokin, died of a complication of diseases at his home, 504 North Eighth street, at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. He was in his 61st year. Mr Malick was born in Shamokin Nov 11, 1875, the son of W.H. Malick and Clementine Roadarmel. He was reared here and spent his entire life in Shamokin. Surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Edward, of Harrisburg; Elmer, of Morrisville; Wallace of Elysburg; Miss Maude Malick, of Shamokin, and Miss Carrie Malick, of Cleveland.
