Original will of Margaret (Persing) Dewitt found at Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA at the courthouse. It was entered in the will book on pages 121 & 122 and filed October 3, 1848 (note: the paper is falling apart. I taped it back together as best possible, but reading everything is impossible. When I was at the courthouse in the 1980s, the wills were kept in open cardboard boxes on shelves and most in deplorable condition: "____________testament of Margaret Dewitt, of Augusta Township, in the county of Northumberland. I, Margaret Dewitt, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of sound mind and memory, (blessed be ___ almighty god for the same) do make and publish this my last and testament, in manner and form following, (that is to say) First, I give and bequeath unto my son William the farm he now occupies after paying out the sum of sixty dollars without interest and the said William is to pay to his sister Elizabeth Reppert the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to paid in yearly payments, the first payment to be paid in one year after the death of the said Margaret Dewitt, and pay to the said Elizabeth Reppert twenty five dollars yearly until the whole is paid. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth all my clothing, and the bedding to be equally divided between the said Elizabeth and William, and there is nothing to be sold of my Household furniture after my decease, but shall be equally divided between Elizabeth and William Item, I give and bequeath to my son Abraham Dewitt the sum of one hundred and eighteen dollars for which the said Margaret holds a note of hand against him which shall be his share of the estate in full. (sentence crossed out) William Dewitt whom I hereby appoint my Executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In ______where I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of February, in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty six." Her Margaret (x) Dewitt mark Signed, sealed, published and declared by the above named Margaret Dewitt to be her last will and testament, in the presence of us, who at her request, and in her presence subscribe our names as witnesses thereunto John Persing Edward Oyster Caveat to the probate of the will of Margaret Dewitt ______of Lower Augusta, dec'd. Filed September 19th, 1848: "To Edward Oyster, Esq., Register of Wills for the County of Northumberland. "I, Elizabeth Reppard, one of the (children?) of Margaret Dewitt, widow, late of Lower Augusta township, in said County, deceased, do hereby (caveat?) and protest against the probate of any last will and testament, or instrument in the nature thereof purporting or pretending to be the Testament and last Will of the said Elizabeth (? that's what is says) Dewitt, dec'd until examination thereof in the proper court and decree of the said court pronounced. "Witness my hand this nineteenth day of September, A.D. Eighteen hundred and forty eight. her Witness - Henry (Donnell?) Elizabeth (x) Reppard mark There are two documents dated October 3, 1848. One is signed by John Persing and Eddward Oyster, Register, and the other by Edward Oyster. Unfortunately, I can't read either. (Author's note: John Persing was Margaret Persing Dewitt's brother.)
