Philadelphia, March 18 1867 William Forsyth, Esq Dear Bill, Your very kind invitation to the golden wedding of your father and mother reached me this morning as also the one enclosed therein for father, which I shall deliver to him during the day. I much regret my inability to be with you on an occasion of this kind, an eventful period in any family and one of rare occurrence in this world, but my engagements as such as to prevent my absenting myself for even a day. I have to request that you wil act as my proxy and present my regrets and congratulations to the bride and groom and when the "flow of soul" occurs, offer for me the following sentiment which you have liberty to amend if necessary as I write in a hurry, "The bride and groom of this wedding feast. May old father time continue to deal gently with them and the old grim death to long forget them and may their venture ever be as a guiding (?) to their descendents." Requesting to be remembered to my many connections in your neighborhood and sending to yourself and family my kind regards, I remain Yours truly, Wm T Martin (?)
