I have not forgotten any of my acquaintances who were boys when I was a boy neither have I forgotten John W Forsyth of Northumberland, although almost five and forty years have passed away since I laid my eyes on you. John, old boy, do you remember the day away back in the "50's" when I took you to Port Treverton in A.P. Lark's carriage then on your way home. How I got back to Berrysberg that day I have no recollection the incident has faded from my memory. I wrote you once during the war of the Rebellion and received and answer, since then I know nothing of you only that I have been told by parties that you still live and hold forth at Northumberland. I have passed through your place frequently in the last 10 years but never had an opportunity to stop off the train to hunt you up. Well how are you anyhow? What have you been doing with yourself all these years-- you and I have lived in thrilling times-- and in an age of wonderful events and marvellous occurrences. Things are not now as they use to be, but we have grown use to the wonders that appear. Have you a family? What is your age, do you feel as if you are approaching the boundary of life. Do you keep well and grow old gracefully-- I hope you do, it is the best wasy all the time. I am 61 in good shape and feel elegant and for the last 30 years have taken first class care of myself. Are you still a Democrat? Well I have asked questions sufficient and written quite enough to keep within the bounds of reason and not to overstep the well established and rigid rules of modesty-- let me hear from you and I will be pleased. Sincerely yours, Wm McGann (written below) Harrisburg has been my home since 1854, except (?) years and 6 months at college.
