The Chateau/Shattos are French Hugenots who had fled to Germany as sometime during the religious wars in the 16th-17th centuries and became Germanized - but maintained the French spelling of the name in many records until the 1760's. The immigrant ancestor was Jean Nicholas Chateau, Sr., who came to Philadelphia with his wife, Eva Marie and namesake son in 1739 on the Loyal Judith - a couple who had eloped first to England as he was a Protestant and she a Catholic. Pennsylvania seems appropriate as a place for them given its religious tolerance. David Shatto was a farmer and a wood worker. His son, William, in an 1890's vanity biography, describes him as: "David Shatto, the father of our subject, was a wood-mechanic, and farmer combined -- in fact, followed various vocations, being possessed of uncommon genius and able to turn his hand to almost anything in his line." William's daughter, mentions that her grandfather, David, made a wooden clock, and it is today a prized heirloom owned by a descendent. Julianna Gardner was widowed in 1841 with a child on the way and four children under the age of 20. At the estate sale of her husband, many relatives bought items including Julia, her husband's watch for a dollar. She remarried shortly after to a widower, Peter Troup, about 20 years her senior whose children were all grown. Peter Troup died in 1848. Her headstone has her second married name, Julia A. Troup, but wife of David Shatto, erected by her children. Many of the children migrated west in the 19th century. Many of these lines ended up in California, Oregon and Washington.
