These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. _______________________________________________________________________ ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY NINTH REGIMENT, BUCKTAIL BRIGADE The one hundred and forty ninth regiment was the first raised on the name and fame of the original Bucktail Regiment and was composed of Perry and Mifflin Co. men skilled in the use of the rifle and wore the bucktail as did the men whose name they adopted. The regiment remained at the capitol till Feb 1863 when it joined General Burnside's army and went into camp at While Oak Church, where it was assigned to duty in the First Army Corps, under command of Colonel Stone. On the 3 and 4 May were under fire at Chancellorsville. Their next engagement was 31 Jun at Gettysburg where they repelled repeated attacks and maintained their position until the retreat of the whole line. Afterwards they were placed in reserve at Cemetery Hill. On the 2nd they assisted the Second Corps. The regiment remained on the front line and was relieved in the morning of the 3rd. The losses in the three days of battle were 205 killed or wounded and 131 missing. On the 4 May 1864, entered the Wilderness where they engaged the enemy. After 2 charges they were compelled to fall back. Their loss was 113 killed and wounded and 93 taken prisoners. On the 8th fought at Laurel Hill, on the 12th Spottsylvania Court House. After continued engagments with the enemy they were sent to guard prisoners at Elmira N.Y. and were mustered out 24 Jun 1865. Promoted from first sergeant 25 Mar 1863, to lieutenant colonel 215th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers 6 Apr 1865. Wounded at Gettysburg 1 Jul 1863 and again at Laurel Hill, Va. 8 May 1864.
