Company B consisted of Perry county men. There were also some in company A & H along with men from Mifflin and Juniata Counties. The 36th regiment was organized in the spring of 1861 under command of Colonel Elisha B. Harvey of Wilkes-Barre. The men went to Camp Wayne near West Chester and were outfited by the state. The regiment remained at this camp till 21 Jul and then moved to Washington D.C. going to Harrisburg first. On the 27 of Jul on Meridian Hill they were mustered in for service of three years. Marching to Tenallytown Md. on the 2 Aug they encamped with the other regiments of the Reserve Division of General McCall. They were then assigned duty in the Second Brigade commanded by General George G. Meade. On the 9 Oct the regiment marched out this camp and moved to Camp Pierpont at Langley Va. and remained for the winter of 1861/62. After marching on the 10 Mar 1862 to Manassas and finding the enemy had withdrawn they marched back to the area of Alexandria and were assigned to the First Army Corps under General Irwin McDowelll Remained at Fairfax Station till 9 Apr when it advanced to Manassas Junction and then to Catlett's Station on the 17th. After marching Falmouth on the 11 May, remained almost a month. On the 9 Jun were transported to White House, Va. and then to the line of the Chickahominy on the right of the Army of the Potomac, attached to General Fitz John Porter's (Fifth) army corps. On the 26 Jun the seventh fought thier first battle at Mechanicsville or Beaver Dam. They held a position for 6 hours and then acted as a rear guard to watch for enemy movement within fifty yards of the enemy line. Withdrew at dawn. The afternoon of the 27th they fought at the battle of Gaines Mill and after 3 charges suffered a loss of almost half of their members as wounded or slain. The 28th Jun the brigade took the road to Savage Station by way of White Oak Swamp to Charles City Cross Roads. This journey driving 500 cattle took till night fall of the 29th. On the 39th they were attacked and fought till nightfall. Over three hundred were killed, wounded or missing in action. The regiment was down to about 200 men. Following this they were sent to Harrison's Landing and occupied a camp for about 6 weeks, during which they crossed the James and cut down the forest and burned the buildings of Edmund Ruffin who sheltered the enemy with the hopes of destroying Union transports and stores collected on the shore of the river at Berkeley Landing. The 15 Aug the regiment was transported to Acquia Creek Landing, then to Kelly's Ford on the Rappahannock and became part of General John Pope's Army of Va. and took part in the battle of Second Bull Run on the 29 & 30, losing badly. Not taking part in the battle of Chantilly they moved to camp at Munson's Hill Va. and on the 7 Sept. camped at Meridian Hill Washington. Marching through Maryland they met the enemy at South Mountain on the 14 Sep. Two days later, joined in the battle at Antietam. On the 26 Oct marched to Warrenton Va., arriving on the 6th, then camped at Belle Plain. The 12 Dec. positioned themselves below the town of Fredericksberg, advanced to the charge and captured prisoners at the cost of 78 killed and wounded. One of the wounded was Lieutenant John Q. Snyder who lost a leg. On the 16th returned to Belle Plain for the winter. On the 14 Apr stationed at Camp Convalescent. In Jun 1863, returned ot Alexandria and remained at guard duty during the summer, fall and next winter. In the spring of 1864, marched to Wilderness. On the 5 May engaged the enemy and became separated from the main army which resulted in their capture. They were marched to the rear to Orange Court House and then to Lynchburg Va. where the officers were sent to Macon Ga. and then to Charleston S.C. and the privates to Andersonville Ga. where 67 died, a larger number died at Florence S.C. prison camp. This left only 110 officers and men who were placed under the command of Capt. Samuel B. King of Company H.
