These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. _______________________________________________________________________ THE FORTY-SECOND REGIMENT, KNOWN AS BUCKTAILS OR KANE RIFLE REGIMENT At the time of its formation it was intended to include only companies of skilled marksmen, recrutied in the spring of 1861, and formed at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg under the command of Colonel Charles J. Biddle. On the 21 Jun 1861, the regiment left Camp Curtin, marched to Hopewell Pa. and on to Camp Mason and Dixon on the Maryland state line, and on the 7 Jul moved to Cumberland Md. On the 12th attacked Confederate cavalry at Ridgeville Va. then fall back to New Creek and Piedmont and on the 27th returned to Harrisburg. The 1 Aug they were ordered to Harper's Ferry under Colonel George H. Thomas' brigade in the division of General Nathaniel P. Banks and remained till 1 Oct when it joined other regiments at Tenallytown Md. On the 9 Oct. moved in the vicinity of Langley Va. On 20 Dec they took part in the battle of Dranesville where 30 were killed or wounded, including Lieutenant Colonel Kane who suffered a wound to the face. In the spring of 1862 they marched to Manassas, finding the enemy gone returned to a camp at Alexandria. They were then moved to Falmouth, and marched back to Rappahannock and ordered to support General Fremont who was confronting Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. They preformed with excellence but the regiment was reduced to 104 men in four companies-C,G,H and I. They inflicted on the four Confederate regiments opposed to them a loss of 559 men killed or wounded. Early in June the other six companies, totaling 400 men, arrived on the 9th White House Va. Moving forward along Chickahominy they held the line from Gaines' Mill to Beaver Dam Creek from the 18 to the 26th of June when they were attacked in what was known as the Mechanicsville battle. Retreating to Gaines' Mill entered in the battle there on the 27th. losing half its force. At Gaines' Mill they fought till thier ammunition was exhausted. Moving to Charles City Cross Roads on the 30th the division commander was wounded and made prisoner and the Bucktail battalion almost annihilated. On the 2nd of July reached camp at Harrison's Landing where they remained for several weeks and were reinforced by part of the men taken prisoner at Mechanicsville. They were moved on the 15 August to Warrenton Va. and became part of General Pope's Army of Va. and then took part in the battle of the Second Bull Run on 29 & 30 of Aug. On the 7 Sep. the four separated companies joined with the Regiment and moved north to Maryland and took part in the battle of South Mountain on the 14th with a loss of 63 killed and wounded. On the 16 & 17 they fought in the battle of Antietam, losing 110 men killed or wounded. Moving back to Va. they camped near Warrenton and then proceeded to Fredericksburg and the battle on the 12 Dec losing 132 killed, wounded or missing. Moving to Fairfax Court House they became part of 22 Corps of McCandless (First) brigade. On 25 Jun 1863 they rejoined the Fifth Corps and marched northward to Maryland and Pennsylvania. Reaching Gettysburg on the 2 Jul 1863, they entered the battle in progress. In the later part of 63 in Va. the regiment engaged in operations and then went into winter quarters at Bristoe Station. The spring of 1864 broke camp 29 Apr, marched to Culpeper and armed with Spencer seven shooting rifles. On the 5th of May engaged in the battle of Wilderness, at Parker's Store. At Spottsylvania, on the 8th took part in 3 unsuccessful charges.They were under constant attact from skirmishers. On the 30 May the regiment fought its last battle at Bethesda Church, its term of service expiring that day. On the 1 Jun they marched to the rear and those not transferred to the 119 Regiment went onward to Harrisburg and on the 11 June they were mustered out. COMPANY B, PERRY COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. The Bucktail Regiment contained a large number of men from Mifflin and Juniata Counties. The Perry County company were recruited at Duncannon under Captain Langhorn Wistar.
