Ziers of Lieut John Whittaker’s Company I of the 53d Regiment of Pa Vols was enlisted by H. S. Dunn of the ____ Regiment of ______ at Juniata Co. Pa on the 19th day of September 1861, to serve three years; he was born in Perry Co. in the State of Pennsylvania is 18 years of age, 5 feet 8 /12 inches high, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a shoemaker. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty ____ days. He states he has been off duty, 10 months, Wounded at Battle of Gettysburg July 2d 1863. Admitted here Jan’y 22d 1864. S. SANITARY COMMISSION. Invalid Army Pension. STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA COUNTY OF PHILADELPHIA, On this 14th day of May A. D. eighteen hundred and sixty-four, personally appeared before me, an Alderman and ex-officio Justice of the Peace, in and for the said County and State, James K. Ziders aged Eighteen years, a resident of Perry County and State of Pennsylvania, who, being duly sworn, according to law, declares that he is the identical James K. Ziders who enlisted in the service of the United States at Dimsville, on the 19th day of September, in the year 1861, as a Sergeant in company “I”, commanded by Lieut. Jno. Whittaker, in the 53d regiment of Pennsylvania Vols, in the war of 1861, and was honorably discharged on the 14th day of May in the year 1864; that while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of duty, he received a gun shot wound in action at Gettysburg July 3 1863, in right thigh – in consequence of which great hemmorage ensued the femoral artery being taken up three times, and there is now great weakness and stiffness of the knee joint, and much trouble in walking – Before entering the U S service he was a Shoemaker by occupation. He hereby appoints W. N. ASHMAN, No. 1307 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pa., to be his true and lawful Attorney, with full power to present and prosecute this claim and receive and receipt for any order, certificate, or money which may be payable under it. Witnesses Present: James K. Ziders Frederick Stinehouse Alexander Ivey Also personally appeared Frederick Stinehouse and Alexander Ivey, residents of Philada. Pa persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present, and saw said Jas. K. Ziders sign his name to the foregoing declaration; and they further swear that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with him, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be; and they further state that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Zeiders, a Pvt of Company I 53d Regiment Pa Infty Volunteers, was enrolled on the 19th day of Sept, 1861, at Perryville, Pa. 3 yrs, and is reported: on muster rolls fo Co from enrollment to June 30, 1863 present. July & Aug, 1863, absent wounded since July 2, 1863. (Co was in action at Gettysburg, Pa, July 1-3, 1863.) So reported on roll for Sept. & Oct, 1863. Roll for Nov & Dec, 1863, incomplete. Jany & Feby, 1864, absent wounded since July 2, 1863. So reported on roll for Mch & April, 1864. May & June, 1864, discharged as Sert. May 14, 1864 for disability, on account of wounds rec’d. Certificate of Disability reports him discharged at Mower Genl. Hospl., Philadelphia Pa., May 14, 1864. Regimental Hospital Records on file of his Service from April 9/62-(with some breaks.)- show him as follows:- July 6/62 admitted with “Icterus.” July 9/62 returned to duty. Dec 29/62 admitted with “Mumps” Jan’y 9/63 returned to duty. To be Executed before a Court of Record or some Officer thereof having Custody of its Seal. State of Illinois, County of Stephenson, SS: ON THIS 19th day of Jany A. D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety one personally appeared before me Dep Clerk of the County court, the same being a court of Record within and for the County and State aforesaid Clara J. Ziders aged 41 years, a resident of the City of Freeport, county of Stephenson, State of Illinois, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is a widow of James K. Ziders, who enlisted under the name of James K. Ziders at _____ on the 19th day of Sept A. D. 1861, in Co I 53rd Regt Pa Vols Inftry and served at least ninety days in the late war of the rebellion, who was honorably discharged May 14th 1864 and died Jany 14th 1891 that she was married under the name of Clara J. Singer to said James K. Ziders on the 3rd day of December A. D. 1867 by Rev. Miller at Liverpool Pa. there being no legal barrier to said marriage neither of said parties having been previously married that she has not remarried since the death of said James K. Ziders that she is without other means of support than her daily labor; that names and dates of birth of all children now living under sixteen years of age of the soldier are as follows: Minnie Ziders born Sept 15 1877 George A. Ziders born Apr 6 1875 Sadie Ziders born Mch 17 1883 That she has heretofore applied for pension, and the number of her application is _________ That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the act of June 27, 1890. She hereby appoints Oscar Estean of Freeport her true and lawful attorneys to prosecute her claim; that her Post Office address is Freeport County of Stephenson, state of Ill. Clara J. Ziders, the claimant, sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said claimant and an acquaintance with her of 5 years and 3 years, respectively, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.
