Democrat; Perry Co., PA; Wednesday February 14, 1883 Mr. John DUNKELBERGER, of Spring township, and Annie CAMPBELL were thrown from a sleigh down a ten-foot embankment in Tuscarora township recently, but escaped serious injury. The horse frightened at the noise of a steam sawmill. John HARPER, of Duncannon, has invented a fire escape car that can be operated from the ground or from any of the upper windows. With this car twenty-four persons can be removed from a fifth-story window in five minutes. Peter KELL, of Carroll, cut one of his hands recently while splitting wood and Wesley MILLER of Kennedy's Valley, struck an axe into one of his feet while engaged in the same kind of work. A valuable farm horse belonging to Dr. H. O. ORRIS died with colic at Liverpool on last Saturday, whither the doctor had driven him, on a professional visit to the wife of Dr. J. P. THOMPSON, who is alarmingly ill with consumption. Newport News. On Friday night last a house belonging to John A. SHEARER, Esq., with a small store room adjoining, were entirely destroyed by fire. The house was insured in the Germania of New York and the store room in the Farmers' of York for $200. We learned nothing as to the origin of the fire or the amount of insurance on the house. The Milltown, Spring township, school house narrowly escaped destruction by fire on Monday morning of last week. When Miss SHOWALTER, the teacher, opened the door she found the room full of smoke, the floor burned through, the stove tumbled over and the chimney down. The fire was soon extinguished. It is thought that some persons had been inthe room during the night who had no business there.
