Handwritten: "1913" John W. Bower, Father of 14 Children, Who Survive Mt. Pleasant, Feb. 18-- John W. Bower, died about 4 o'clock last Friday morning at his home in Jackson township, of heart trouble and dropsy of several months duration, aged 66 years and 18 days. He was the eldest son of the late Michael & Catharine (Long) Bower of Blain. While a young man he bought his home, his parents living with him until after he got married, his parents then moved to Blain. He was first married to Miss Sarah Jane Reeder of near Mannsville, of which union he is survived by Harvey Bower of Mechanicsburg, Mary, Mrs. Charles French of New Jersey; Edward Bower of South Dakota, Miss Katie Bower of Harrisburg, and Charles Bower of White Hill. His first wife died in December 1881. His second wife was Miss Mary Peck of Burns Valley, Franklin county, of which union he is survived by Bert of Lancaster, Marshall of near Fairview, Roy, Company 145, Coast Artillery Corps., Fort Moultrie S.C.; Norman of Gladbrook, Iowa; Dessie, Cloyd, Wilmer, Oscar and Florence, at home. His second wife died in February 1903, the youngest child then being two years old. Mr. Bower, although broken in health, remained at home and took charge of his children, caring and rearing them, as best he, as a father could, willingly and cheerfully. He leaves one brother, Solomon Bower of South Dakota and two sisters, Mrs. William Cramer of East Waterford and Miss Mary Bower of New Kingston. We sympathize with these children in their being bereft of a kind and affectionate father and this community loses a good neighbor and citizen. He united with the Lutheran church a number of years ago and was sexton for several years. He was a soldier of the Civil War. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday at 10 am, by his pastor Rev. J. Reighard, assisted by Rev. G. P. Sarvis, in the Lutheran church of New Germantown. He was buried in the Methodist cemetery of same place, beside his second wife. The pall bearers were Orie C. Smith, Foster T. Seager, Charles F. Tressler, Thomas C. Droneberger, Charles Otto and Edward Hockenberry. J. C. Martin was the funeral director. Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were Harvey Bower, wife and child of Mechanicsburg, Charles Bower of New Kingston, Miss Katie Bower of Harrisburg, James Reeder and his brother Thomas Reeder of near Mannsville and Dr. Shanabrook and wife and William Smith and wife of Blain.
