He was born in Liverpool, Perry County, on Oct. 19, 1921, son of Anna Boyer Michaels of Selinsgrove and the late Kenneth D. Michaels. He married the former Fern Fianna Miller in 1959. She died on Sept. 19, 1992. He was a graduate of Selinsgrove High School. He entered the Marine Corps on August 22, 1942, served in the Pacific Theater as a private first class. He was awarded the Purple Heart for valor. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 7, 1945. He was first employed as a truck driver for Eastern Express, based in Harrisburg, and then drove for Arkansas Best Freight Co. in the Carlisle terminal, retiring in 1983. He was Protestant. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5640, Middleburg. He was a member of Teamsters Retirees 776, Harrisburg, the Marine Corps League and the West Shore EMS. He enjoyed hunting and returning to the Liverpool area to visit with friends. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, John W. of Mechanicsburg; a daughter, Kelley L. Fussenegger of Mechanicsburg; a stepson, Donald Elsesser Jr. of Sebastion, Fla.; a brother, Louis of Lemoyne; a sister, Bea Evans of Hamilton, Mont.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, 606 N. Front St., Liverpool, by the Rev. J. Kenneth Barner. Burial will be in St. John's (Barners) Lutheran Cemetery, RR1 Liverpool, where full military honors will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5640, Middleburg. Visitors may call Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
