Contributed by Connie Callaway cecall@webaccess.net ================================= The will of Abraham Grassel of Juniata Twp. was the first will probated in the Perry Co. Court. Written 26 Sep 1819 and proven 11 Jan 1820, he made bequests to Peter Troup & Peter's son, Abraham, as well as his (A. Grassel"s) sisters..."except Christina "McKnight" to whom I leave nothing". Did not name other sisters. ================================================ In the name of God, amen, I, Abraham Gresley, of the Township of Juniata, County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, being very sick but of perfect mind and memory, and considering the mortality of my body, do make this my last will and testament as follows, viz: First, I allow the Doctor's bill to be paid and also the charges of my lying sick. My riffle gun I give to Peter Troup. My chest, my watch, and all of my wearing apperil which is at Peter Troup's, I give to his son Abraham. The remainder of my property I allow to be equally divided among my sisters, except Christina Mc Naughton, to whom I leave nothing. I have a chest of clothing, a crop sythe, a grain cradle and sythe, a great coat, and a aist coat at Barbara "Rothfougs" in Dauphin County. A mall and wedges, an axe, a calf skin, and six yards of shirting is at David Hoover's in Dauphin County. A pair of boots is at Jacob Pottemers in said county. I have also bonds and notes in the hands of Henry Landis to the amount of about seven hubdred dollars. My funeral expenses shall be paid by Executors as soon after my decease as shall be convenient. Lastly, I do nominate and appoint Jacob Whitmore of Dauphin County my sole Executor. Witness my hand this twenty-sixth day of September in the year of our Lord one eight hundred and nineteen. I, Jacob Whiitmore, of Dauphin County in the State of Pennsylvania, having been named as sole executor of Abraham Gresley, late of Cumberland County (now Perry) in the State aforesaid, dec'd as appears by his last will and testament dated the sixth [26th] day of September Anno Domini 1819, Do Hereby renounce the executorship of the aforesaid deed. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand the 24th day of October Anno Domini One Thousand eight hundred and twenty. Mitchell Esquire of the Township of Tyrone, County of Perry and State aforesaid, are held and firmly Bound unto the Commonwealth to which payment well & truly to be made & done. We do bind ourselves jointly and severally for and in the whole, our heirs, executors and administrators firmly by these Presents, Sealed with our seals and dated the Eleventh day of January AD One thousand eight hundred and twenty one. The Condition of this obligation is such that the above Bounden William Murray, administrator of all ans singular the Goods and Chattels, rights and credits of Abraham Gressly late of the County of Cumberland (now Perry) and State afoesaid, deceased, do make or cause to be made a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the Goods and Chattels, rights and credits of the said Deceased, which have or shall come into his hands, possession or knowledge of him the said William Murray or into the hands or possession of any oter person or persons for him and the same so made do exhibit or cause to br exhibited unto the Regiters Office in the County of Perry at or befoore the eleventh day of January 1821 and the same Goods, Chattels and credits and all other the goods and chattels rights and credits of the said deceased, at the time of his death which at any time after [that] shall come to the hands or p ossession of the said William Murray or into the hands of any other person or persons for him, do well and truly administer according to law and further do make or cause to be made a true andjust accont of his said Administration at or brfore the eleventh day of January 1822 and all the rest and residue of the said goods and chattels, rights and credits which shall be found remaining upon the said Administrator's account, thr same being first examined and allowed of by the Orphans Court of the county where the administration is granted shall deliver and pay unto such person or persons respectively as the said Orphans Court by their desire or sentence pursuant to the true intent and meaning of this act shall limit and appoint. Fulmilen, Registrar OTHER NOTES: Below is some more notes regarding this grassel family. 1. 2nd Series Pennsylvania Archives, Vol XVII..."Names of Foreigners Who took the Oath of Allegiance": "Mattheis Grassel took the oath at Philadelphia when he arrived 6 Oct 1767 on the ship Hamilton from Rotterdam, Charles Smith, commanding." "Jacob Grassel & Phillip Gresel" took the oath at Philadelphia when they arrived 22 Oct 1754 on the ship Halifax from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, Cpt. Thomas Coatam, commanding." 2. Matthias Grassle appeared in Rockhill Twp., Bucks Co. in 1779. The records of the Indianfield Lutheran Church, Franconia Twp., Bucks Co. contains the following entry: Abraham, son of Matthew & Anna Maria Graussel was born 30 Apr 1785 & baptized 12 June 1785. The sponsors were Abraham Wambold & his wife Louisa. 3. [GS 874035] St. Michael's Evangelican Lutheran Church, Pfoutz's Valley near Liverpool, Greenwood Twp, Perry Co, PA. Records 1774 - 1902 Pg 2: In the year 1803, December 18th, on the 4th Sunday in Advent, Holy Communion was held by Mr Johannes Herbst, Lutheran Pastor...communicant's names: #10 Johannes Kepner & wife, #11 Christinna #12 Mathias Grassle & wife, #13 Anna Maria #14 Joseph Frey & wife, Pg 5: In the year 1805, October 20th, on the 19th Sunday after Trinity, communion was held by John Conrad Walter, Lutheran preacher in the Miniterium......#34 Mathias Grassle In the year 1807, June 28th, the following children were confirmed & communion ws held by Mr. Conrad Walter, Lutheran preacher in the Miniterium, on the 5th Sunday after Trinity...#33 Christina Grassle, #34 Eva Grassle. (Compare IGI Indianfield Luthern Church, Bucks Co, PA: Grassle, Mattias & Anna Maria; Wambold, Abra. & Louisa) 4. Other children from un-documented source at Perry Co. Historians: -states Matthias was also father of Catharina md Peter Troup; Christina born 1786/7; and Eva born ??. On 23 Jun 1801, Matthias Grassly, wife Maria, grandparents, were sponsors at the baptizm of Heinrich, born 26 Feb 1801, s/o Peter Traub & wife Catharina at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Pfoutz Valley, Greenwood Twp., Perry Co. (then Cumberland Co.). -Possibly Matthias' wife died and he re-married, as in 1829, one "Catharina Grassle, late wife of Godleip Westfall" released her share of the Westfall estate. Godliep Westfall died in Rye Twp. about 18__.
