Townsend worked for the Grand Trunk Railroad, and was hired by John Wanamaker when the old Railway Depot was converted to Wanamaker's Department Store. He served as Wanamaker's chief of security, and store detective, and an instructor at the Wanamaker Institute of Industry, until his death in 1922. His funeral was conducted from his home at 3049 North 10th Street, Philadelphia, and attended by all the Wanamaker employees; the members of the Appolo Lodge, Royal Arch Chapter 307, the Kadosh Commandery #29 Knight’s Templar, Philadelphia Consistory, the S.P.R.S.
