Mrs. P. Stopper, a member of the Pennypack church committee, sent me this information from the church index cards. This is a partial history of the Dungan's who were member's of the Pennypack church and are interred in the cemetery. ========================= Jane, Received you note today-here are the Dungan notes from the cemetery card file. Following notes & property. It all began way back in 1756. before the Revolutionary War, when large land holding was granted to Benjamin Dungan., who built the original stone house. After the war, Mr. Dungan, now a Captain, returned to his family & farm. One of his sons, Morgan was an active member of the Baptist Church at Pennypack. It was after the death of his father, when the property passed into his hands, that the name Chapel Croft came into existence. Many times the snows were too deep and services were held at the Dungan farm, hence the name Chapel (meaning place of worship) and Croft (meaning farm). The home & farm pass successively through the Dungan family until after the Civil War when General Huey of union army fame married a Wester of Germantown. It was then divided into 65 properties. During the 1895-1899 period Mayor Edward S. Stewert of Phila. used the house as a summer home. After 1915, the house was once again sold to a descendant of the Dungan family (Evans) in whose possession it remained until torn down in 1961. Was located on the East of Bustleton Ave.., North of Murray St.. The site then became an apartment house call Chapel Croft. BURIALS: Dungan, Abraham S. side church yard d. 1817 Dungan, Annie E. The pews are original-very narrow and there are swinging door panels on each side of them. There are two front doors. Enter the right one and immediately inside is a stair way to the balcony on three sides of the church. A service is held once a year, the first Sunday in June. The cemetery surrounds three side of the church and a few burials are on the opposite side of Krewstown Rd.
