As both the burials and inscriptions date from the erection of the church edifice, A. D. 1760, it is needless to say that Mr. Bronson's work was a great one; and to be accomplished only by persevering labor, great attention, and deep personal interest in the undertaking. The difficulties to be overcome were very great, for the hand of time had rested heavily on most of the older stones, almost obliterating the words which had been graven as a perpetual memorial, or sinking them so that a part of the inscription is a foot or more below the surface of the ground. The work was a tedious one, occupying many months, and had to be performed sometimes beneath the scorching heat of summer and sometimes in the sharpness of the winter's cold. Mr. Bronson, however, accomplished it all and accomplished it well, and besides copying the inscriptions, spared no pains in establishing the identity of the unmarked graves which are scattered throughout the yard; adding from the Parish Registers and from the private records the names of many persons interred in the vaults north of the church. On completion of the work an effort was made to publish it, but beyond a very liberal contribution from one gentleman, little or nothing was done, until January of the current year. The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, in whose fire-proof Cartulary the manuscript had for some time been deposited, then offered to print the "Inscriptions &c.," in its newly published periodical "The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography," provided a certain portion of the expense, to be incurred thereby, should be pledged by the Parishioners of St. Peter's and others interested in the work. When something more than half the sum asked for had been subscribed, the project, for various reasons, was found impracticable and after some further delay the present editor, with consent of Mr. Bronson, undertook, as a labor of love, to produce the work in its present form. It was my intention at the outset to add as an APPENDIX, some unpublished matter relating to the history of St. Peter's Church in the 18th century, including the original petition to the Penns, by William Plumsted and others, for a grant of a part of the lot now occupied by the church, together with the list of subscribers to the building fund with, so far as possible, short biographical notices of all the 400 subscribers and various other records more or less similar in character. The intention was adhered to until the work was more than half printed, when the size of the volume far exceeded my expectations that I was forced to abandon it and restrict the appendix to two or three short biographical sketches. I may add that before the manuscript was committed to the printer, with the kind assistance of Mr. Bronson, I compared the whole of it with the tombstones, noting, as will be seen in several places, that some stones have been removed since the copy was first made, and completing the transcription down to September 1st, 1878. I have also compared every page of my printer's proof with the inscriptions on the stones and have verified every date of death with the burial Register of the Parish, and, when such dates are not given, have, as far as possible, supplied the date of burial from the same source. I musts say, in justice to my careful printer, Mr. Chew, that the occasional errors both of orthography and syntax, which may arrest the reader's eye, and perhaps provoke a smile, are to be attributed without exception to the fidelity with which the transcriptions have been copied.
