Bird M. D, residing at No. 601 North eleventh street in the city of Philadelphia – who being duly sworn according to law does depose and say, that he was well acquainted with the late Richard C. Schreiner before the said Richard C. Schreiner enlisted in the service of the the United States, and knows that he was in good, sound physical health, he the deponent, being the family physician to said Richard C. Schreiners family; and that the said “ Schreiner” never had inflammatory rheumatism or any other serious illness until he contracted the same to the best of the deponent’s knowledge and belief in the service of the United States, during the war of the rebellion, and the deponent further says that shortly after the return home of the said Richard C. Schreiner, he the deponent was called where to attend him professionally and found him suffering from acute articular rheumatism, his feet and ankle joints being the parts particularly involved, and the he the deponent – continued to visit him at short intervals up to the time of his the said Schreiners death, he never recovered from the disease which seemed to partake somewhat of a gouty character finally produced some cardiac troubles. I saw him in consultation with Dr. D.K. Bartine the day before he the said Richard C. Schreiner died, he was then in a comatose condition indicating that his heart and brain had become involved. I have no doubt that the said Richard C.
